Hi, Heather, I found out today that I tested positive for b. hominus, which may be the reason I haven't been getting better. A lot of folks have it (like 20% of the population!) and are asymptomatic, but if you have gut problems, you may be more likely to get sick. In a lot of people it just goes away, because they are able to fight it off. A lot of doctors will not even bother treating it, and even my doctor told me that initially.
I read that this bug is more prevalent in people with IBS due to weak systems, but I also read that a lot of times people have this and are misdiagnosed as having IBS, because it can stay in the body for a long time, and it doesn't always show up in standard testing.
Anyway, I'm going to try treatment for it and hope for the best. The treatment may make me feel worse for awhile.
I have read a lot of posts lately of other people who can't get well, and I would really encourage them to go to the doctor if they're not getting better and have testing done. If, like me, you have IBS to begin with, it's easy to just assume that it's the IBS. But I would think that if you stay on the diet a couple of months and can't get stable, there may be something else going on.
I read another website that gave some info saying that if you have b. hominis, you shouldn't eat starchy foods. So I'm a little at a loss with how to do that and still eat IBS safe. Any thoughts?
So,just wanted to let you know how my tests went, and to thank you for all the encouragement along the way. Cross your fingers that the "cure" works. Then maybe I can give the diet a go and get some good results!!
Thanks, Judith
