Ugh, that's the worst, when you get out of your routine and it hits you like that. Do you have a heating pad handy there? How about some hot herbal tea? Peppermint is best for spasms, but just about any will do - the heat is soothing.
If you want to go the therapy route - and it can really work wonders - stick with it and give it time to work. I have friends who swear by their therapists.
I ended up having to go on medication, because I was having severe panic attacks constantly, and I had lost so much weight that I was underweight and still losing. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which medications are best, or have the least side effects, because everyone reacts differently to them. However, I can tell you that I'm on 20mg Lexapro right now, and once I got past the initial side effects (which do stink, but they're temporary), it's been *fantastic* - I'm not miraculously cured of my IBS *or* my anxiety disorders, but I'm not crippled by panic attacks anymore, and there have been no sexual side effects either, thank goodness!
I was always against meds too, by the way, but I'm glad I gave them a chance... I was SO sick from the anxiety, I'm sure I would have been hospitalized if I hadn't given them a try. But I do feel that therapy can work wonders, and anything that reduces stress - the hypnotherapy program, yoga, etc - is going to help too. So don't feel obligated to try medication if it's not your thing!
