Ulcer and hiatal hernia!

Well, I was diagnosed with IBS (without having any tests done) about 6 years ago. I have had symptoms for about 18 years. In August, my GI found blood in my stool. In October I finally had a colonoscopy which turned out normal. Since then my PCP has found blood in my stool, so he suggested an endoscopy. On Saturday I had the endoscopy and my new GI found that I had a small ulcer in my stomach, a hiatal hernia and acid erosion in my esophagus, stomach and duodenum! I was shocked. This would of course, explain the pain I've been in for as long as I can remember. I just can't believe none of my other doctors up until now thought to do an endoscopy - even after complaining about stomach pain and asking about Helicobacter Pylori (the bacterium that can cause ulcers).

I'm basically just venting here, but I wonder how long I've had these conditions, thinking all the while it was "just IBS" (as if that weren't enough).

Has anyone had similar experiences? Any tips for dealing with the ulcer or hernia. The doctor hasn't put me on any medication yet as we're still waiting on the results of the biopsies he took on Saturday.
