I basically went to the doctor and said "I think I have IBS, this is what works for me with food, exercise, stress etc.."
He had me do some blood tests, then the terribly awful GI series (lower GI, which is a barium enema, which has the same prep as a colonoscopy but there's no surgery, and an upper GI, where you drink a huge bottle of barium). It all came out clear so he gave me the IBS diagnosis.
I can't say I got a lot out of those visits because my doctor really didn't tell me anything helpful for managing my IBS. However I'm really glad I did it, because now I KNOW that I have IBS (which isn't great) but more importantly, I know there's nothing ELSE wrong with me, which is relieving.
