I couldn't agree more. Everything is easier and functions smoother when you've had adequate sleep.
I'm chiming in also with your suggestions regarding sleep hygiene. It took me awhile to really figure this out. Create a ritual around bedtime, and adhere to it as much as possible: soothing bath, aromatherapy, light (not over-stimulating) TV or reading, perhaps a relaxation tape or yoga or another ritual that promotes deep relaxation (session 1 of the IBS-100 recordings is ideal). And waking up at about the same time every day- those two components are really helpful.
Many of this site probably fall into the category of "HSP" (highly sensitive person)- Check out this thread- a recently identified personality/ physiological trait characterized by (among other things) greater than average production of the hormone cortisol, which is the hormone secreted duing high levels of stimulation. In the HSP, cortisol also stays in the body longer. Result: stimulation close to bedtime will tend to keep the body in "overdrive"- and not in sleep mode. That's why this ritual is really important and useful. here are more useful details & suggestions.
A caveat around Benadryl: like any other soporific drug, it's gonna lose its effectiveness after a while, so save it for "special occasions".
Hope this is helpful.
