I recently had a horrible bout of insomnia related to perimenopause. I, too, was waking up around 4 or 5 in the morning and could not go back to sleep for anything. A few days after that started, I started suffering with some anxiety issues; that were just totally foreign to me and I knew it was strictly hormonal, but so out of my control.
I have hot flashes, too, but I don't find them to be nearly as bothersome as the insomnia and anxiety. Anyway, my doctor prescribed Xanax for the insomnia, which actually did help. I would get about 6 hours of sleep instead of 4 or 5. I know that doesn't sound like much of a difference, but it was to me! For me, that round of insomnia/anxiety only lasted about 2 weeks and then I went back to normal.
My doctor said she could put me on Effexor since mine is cyclical, but I don't want to mess with my body anymore than I have to and the Xanax did help. I just take it as needed.
In other words, my symptoms are much more pronounced when I'm on my period; which is very irregular these days. Whew! This is quite a stressful process, isn't it?
