The gi specialist who prescribed me miralax about 4 years ago said his SISTER was using it everyday since it came out! If he felt it was safe enough for his sister, I felt ok with taking it! He did tell me that I would probably have to take it long term and my colon could very well become dependant on it. Well ok, not wonderful news but I can live with that, I CAN'T live with chronic constipation!
Last winter I did try to stop taking it. I have been trying to have a baby and was concerned about taking it during pregnancy. Technically, its a class C drug for pregnancy. I went about 6 weeks before I gave in and went back on it! During that period of time, the only BM's I had were produced by over the counter laxatives-had to do something when I went THREE weeks without popping!! Anyway, I am back on it and have talked to my drs about it during pregnancy and they all say its fine. I saw another gastrointerolist (sp?) for a lipoma they found in my colon. Turned out to be nothing but I asked that dr about taking it during pregnancy and he said he gave it to his pregnant wife!
So, I guess my point to all that is I feel reasonably comfortable in the fact that I would probably have to take it for the rest of my life. There are times when I'm fairly stable, I can cut the dose down to half a dose a day and there are other times when I have to take 2 doses a day. I have not built up any sort of tolerance to it, like I did with Zelnorm. I mix Heathers Acacia right in with it in my morning "cocktail." I take it with me when ever I travel. If I skip a dose totally, it usually takes a day or two to catch up with me. I haven't heard of any problems taken it long term, other than your body will probably become dependant on it. My body didn't work right in the first place, or I wouldn't have needed it!!!
If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask!!
