I had the appointment with my GI doctor today, I was really nervous about it but it went great. I had a ton of questions that I got to ask him.
We had a long chat about I have been and he was very sympathetic and listened to me. He cancelled my antispasmodic and put me on an antidepressant- Cipramil/citalopram 20mg . He was very nice and gave me a big explanation that he didn't think I was depressed but that research had shown it was useful for IBS etc. I told him I had "read up" on the area so I understood, but he obviously has patients who are very sensitive about taking an antidepressant, but really at this stage I would be happy to have the word "IDIOT" tatooed on my forehead if it made my tummy better!
I told him what my GP(general practitioner doctor) said yesterday and waited for him to agree.. BUT HE DIDN'T - he said that diet did have a lot to do with relieving IBS but that different patients of his were thriving on completely different diets, that a lot depends on the person. I understand that since everyone on the boards talks about being able to tolerate different things. He advised me to continue keeping my food diary to see what triggers me most.
He has written to my GP explaining my illness ("moderately severe IBS"- how can something be both "moderate" and "severe"?? )and the relevant treatment and I am to refer back to her(GP) not him. She will probably see the Antidepressant and think she was right but at least I know the truth!
ANYWAYS, I am so much happier now. Drug attempt No2- is there ANY chance it might be the last? At least I feel supported by my GI doctor which is great
Feeling positive...found a place that has soy icecream on the way back from my appointment!!
