I haven't had IBS long (2 years) and am older like you, and a severe "C" (also pain predominant). It takes a while to learn the right combination that will keep you regular, but when you do, oh boy it's terrific. I take soluble fiber supplements before meals, but unless I supplement that with a triple dose of psyllium taken only at night (because it will bloat you like a Goodyear Blimp) nothing happens the next day. (I use Konsyl.) Also stool softeners on a regular basis. Yet there are times even with all that, that I've had to use M of M, but only 1 T. no more. If I'd taken the dose you had I too would have not left the bathroom. Be real careful about MoM..it's harsh stuff. Try to get as many insoluble foods in your diet too, but in a safe form...well cooked, pureed, etc.
