I found these by chance at the bins in my grocery store (where you can buy nuts, grains, etc. in bulk). They look very similar to rolled oats (the old fashioned kind - not instant). The price was right - 99 cents a pound!

They take a little longer to cook than rolled oats. I cooked 1 cup of barley flakes in 2 cups of water on a low heat until all the water was absorbed (about 20 min.)

When they are cooked they look just like cooked oats. They are quite nutty tasting and a little bit firmer than oats.
