It seems the poster is recently new to being hypoglycemic and when you're in early stages of diagnosis or "off the wagon" big time.. you have to adhere to a very very strict diet to get yourself back to where you should be and stay on that until you can maintain and then balance correctly. The bad thing about being hypo is it can flip into type 2 diabetes as I said on other post and then back again which makes it even more dangerous as it throws your whole metabolism and body off every time it flip flops.

We should NOT have white rice, pasta's or anything that metabolies quictly into sugars because the body's way of coping with it is to throw out MORE insulin which we are already resistant to... and it creates a cycle circle of all the bad things over and over. Hope that makes sense I'm sleep deprived today.

Once I get my glycemic level back insync I can eat most anything I want within reason. I LOVE REAL Italian and some good places in Chicago to go... but I would limit myself to a piece of two of fresh bread and a pasta dish with lots of protein to go with it (chicken breast etc) along with either big salad or lots of steamed veggies. It in essence becomes a balancing act you need a good with a bad and a larger portion of the good to offset the bad and still be beneficial to your glycemic level. And idealistically if you're going to have something on the 'bad" list then you should try to have 2 good, suggested is a protein along with a vegetable and/or low glycemic fruit.

I can literally feel my blood sugar dropping especially when I've really been off diet and its sinking fast I get an odd feeling and a sudden sharp headache and my mood will switch quickly to being very grumpy and irritable. After 25 years of marriage my husband knows how to read when my blood sugar in in the loo senario and will just say very simply and calmly... you're being a witch go eat some protein.. ok not so subtle but it gets my attention and I do it. Hits my stomach and simple digestion starts and gets some of it to my bloodsteam I start to feel better and within a short time I'm out of the low sugar funk and back to normal.

It can happen just waiting too long between snacks or meals without eating anything "bad"... it's usually all controlled with diet and once you get good at the balancing act its quite simple. But its the variables that make it rough most of the time, especially those that have a way of rapidly throwing your glucose level into that deep hole so fast you don't realize it until its too late. Getting back out is much harder than falling in trust me.. I've been balancing this for over 30 years. Stress is a real bad guy in all of this, which usually triggers the cravings for carbs and other comfort foods which through you deeper into that hole.

I'm not a big dairy person. I love different cheeses and yogart occassionaly but that is about it. I do not eat eggs in any shape or form, they gross me out both site, smell, texture and taste. I have allergies to milk itself but not cheese in moderation. I can use milk as an additive in receipes but cannot drink it, so my consumption of milk in any form is very limited. However, cheese is considered a good protein for hypoglycemics yet on a low carb/smart carb diet its to be very limited and to certain kinds - since their are "soft cheeses" such as Brie and then hard cheeses like Chedders etc. Depending which expert of the day you read one says only soft, one says only hard. I compromise and have a little of either one depending what's here.

I like brown rice which is on the OK occassionally list and mix that with Wild Rice which isn't a rice at all but I like the taste and the chewy texture.

Caffine and alcohol are definitely bad and I am my own worst enemy when it comes to a nice stiff drink at the end of the day to relax... some times I have no reaction at all other times I really upsets my guts. Caffine ?? I have always had 1 cup of coffee in the AM... curse of being Scandanivan.. Swedes love their strong black coffee in the morning. I seldom drink more than one, but when I do I feel it the rest of the day, its like battery acid in my guts.

I find what I've read on this site good sound advice and commonsense to combating the IBS problem.. but this situation of being thrown into having to deal with 2 conflicting situations is going to really be a challenge to work out and I can understand this posters frustration more than most. I tried talking to my GP and that was like spitting into the wind.. he got back on the "drug" kick again and I told him goodbye...
