It's a good idea to go to a class, especially at first, but it's really easy to be doing the poses slightly wrong, but slightly wrong can mean they don't do what they should do or could even hurt you. So it's good to get pointers from an instructor before you try it on your own.
But give it a go at home first if you want to see if you like it and then go to classes.

Hey Beth!
I have a yoga mat and you should get one for sure if you want to do yoga at home. I don't have a strap but use a scarf for some things. I don't use a block or cushion but many people do.
Classes all have mats included and usually blocks too, and sometimes cushions. Just ask of you're not sure.
I just wear Old Navy yoga pants and a tank top. yoga pants Nothing special. Just make sure that it's comfy and not too tight. You need to be able to move into a million funny positions. I would wear a sports bra too if you take a class.
Good luck, hon! Oh and bring a bottle of water too.

Well, I'm determined... I'm going to keep doing it even if it does make me "go" and I really don't need to. LOL! I haven't done it again since the last time I tried it, but I did go ahead and get the mat, because it was literally IMPOSSIBLE for me to get any traction on the carpet unless I was wearing sneakers, which just isn't right for yoga.
Anyway...
The CD is divided up into sections - tracks, just like on a normal music CD. What I do is lay out the cards for each section, do that section, then pause the cd to lay out the cards for the next section. I definitely refer to them as needed when I'm doing the workout, and I haven't found it to be awkward or a distraction. In fact, after the first time I did the routine, I literally had memorized half the poses! They're really not difficult... a lot of them feel like second nature, and you'll have no problem remembering them.
The thing I like about the CD is that it's very, very easy to change the workout to suit your skill level. There's even a list of different "programs" you can do, selecting only certain sections. That's a LOT easier on a CD than a tape! Right now, when I DO do the yoga, I'm doing the ultra-beginner routine - warmup and cooldown, basically. And like I said, after only a couple times doing it, I know pretty much all of the poses (by name, even!) and hardly look at the cards at all.
The CD itself is, indeed, just Cyndi talking over some soothing music. I rather like it. Once you get used to the postures, you can close your eyes and really get into the routine, rather than focusing on watching someone on a screen, which gets to be habit.
I'd never done yoga before this, either, so it's not like I had any experience with it to give me an advantage, by the way.
But like everything else, it's a matter of personal preference. If you think a tape/DVD would be easier for you to follow, by all means go that route! A yoga workout will give you the same benefits no matter what format the instruction is in.

I would have trouble with a DVD as I find watching the TV not at all conducive (sp?) to meditation! Also, if I have a headache, I can't watch the tv, but yoga can help.

I tried yoga for a couple of weeks and every time I did it I'd end up dashing to the loo. Seeing as I was already suffering D I kinda got a bit scared to keep going with it. I was going 2 times a day with the yoga plus extras Kinda glad to know I'm not the only one. I thought I was weird or something.
