I have one: I like grits cooked in the microwave and flavored with a pinch of salt, a pat of butter, and a few spoonfuls of jam. Sugar or honey is good, too, in place of jam. I used to eat a lot of oatmeal but it sometimes made my stomach hurt (even though I know it's supposed to be safe), so now I stick to grits when I want hot cereal. What do other people eat for a quick breakfast?
Oh, I thought of one more: Kellogg's Pop-Tarts (but not the Kroger generics) are dairy-free--and I can eat them in class.

Here's from web page hominy grits = grits = corn grits Notes: This Southern staple is made from hominy or plain corn that's been ground until it has the consistency of coarse sand. It's used as a side dish, a breakfast cereal, or as an ingredient in baked goods. Varieties include quick-cooking grits and instant grits. Substitutes: polenta meal (This is corn that's often stone-ground, so that it retains the nutritious germ.) OR buckwheat grits OR barley grits
BTW: If anyone needs to look something up, this website is great! I found it a couple of weeks ago & I've used it for the boards as well as my own use. You can look up all types of foods & it even lists substitutions for everything...very convenient!
"The Cook's Thesaurus is a cooking encyclopedia that covers thousands of ingredients and kitchen tools. Entries include pictures, descriptions, synonyms, pronunciations, and suggested substitutions." Their website is www.foodsubs.com

That foodsubs page is great! Actually, I never knew what grits were until I came down to the States either -- haven't had the experience yet, although there's still lots of time.

Hi - Fructose (fruit sugar) can cause cramps, diarrhea, bloating, and gas. It's found in highest quantities in bottled fruit juices, commercial beverages (like soda pop) and commercial foods that use it as a sweetener (like the pop tarts). Most people tolerate it in small quantities, but some people are so sensitive that even a little bit can set them off. And just about everyone with IBS will react to larger quantities.

I always get all the sugars confused! I've read your book (I should start taking it everywhere I go--ever think of making a pocket sized version? Table sugar is the one you say is ok...and that's sucrose, right? All the other oses are possible triggers? Hopefully I'll get this cleared up once and for all! Thanks so much Heather!!

Yes, sucrose is just table sugar, and won't cause the problems fructose can. Sorbitol is the other sugar to watch for - it's in highest quantities in diabetic candies and cookies.
High fructose corn syrup is used commercially as a sweetener because it's cheaper than using cane sugar (sucrose). This is why it's almost always safer to home-cook than to rely on commercial foods...unless you really scrutinize those labels!

I knew Quaker made a "pop-tart" of their own but it has at least as much high-fructose corn syrup as Kellogg's Pop-Tarts AND dairy, too. We've obviously got very different tummies. I know high-fructose corn syrup isn't good for me but Pop-Tarts are kind of a treat for me: dairy-free, portable, and not a trigger. So I think I'll stick with 'em.

Yeah, I know high fructrose sugar sets me off majorly! In extremely small quantities, im okay. But I remember once i had a popcycle (with 100% hih fruc.) and man, i was as sick as a dog for like EVER! I seem to handle corn syrup a bit better than high fructrose corn syrup. anyone know the diff?

Regular corn syrup has less fructose than the "high fructose" version. It's the fructose you're reacting too, so the more you eat the worse the problem.
If you cook with corn syrup, use the dark instead of light. It's usually just plain corn syrup, whereas the light version has high fructose.

Ohhh, this is good stuff. It's a natural, unrefined sweetener. Expensive, unfortunately, but nice stuff. You can get barley malt syrup, too, and that's great as well.
You can use these sweeteners as you'd use honey in tea or on toast, on hot cereal, etc. And you can also bake desserts with them, though this can get tricky. You can get vegan cookbooks where they don't use any refined sweeteners, but things like the rice syrup.

TessLouis, I just want to thank you for the pop tart idea. I've been eating half a poptart every morning after my bowl of rice and banana and no D! Usually fructrose corn syrup affects me for the worse, but since ive been taking Levsin, i seem to tolerate foods that i couldnt tolerate before much better.I only eat a half, but its oh so good! i checked the ingredients and the only non ibs ingredient is the artifical sugar. i love strawberry frosted pop tarts. mm mm good! Thanks Again
