saw this on martha stewart a while back. though it would be interesting to try but have yet to do it haven't really had tofu yet other than in premade stuff.. maybe you guys can be my guinea pigs..hehe
let me know how it tastes Soy Sticks Serves 4 1 pound extra-firm tofu Coarse salt Freshly ground pepper Ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise, for serving 1. Preheat the broiler. Line baking sheet with a Silpat (a French nonstick baking mat); set aside. 2. Cut tofu horizontally into four 1/2-inch-thick slabs. Lay tofu flat on a clean kitchen towel. Fold towel over tofu, and press gently to remove excess moisture. Cut each piece lengthwise into six 1/2-inch-wide strips. Place on prepared baking sheet. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Place under broiler and cook, turning every 2 to 3 minutes, until golden brown and crisp, about 10 minutes. Serve hot, with desired condiments

These sound really interesting. I wonder what they taste like - I wouldn't mind guinea pigging.
But, what if you don't have a Silpat? Think it would work with non-stick spray, or maybe even parchment paper? I've never used parchment paper yet either.

Say what you like about Martha Stewart, but she was right about the Silpat! I LOVE mine! I have two cookie sheets and a large muffin "tin". I never have to use Pam spray or anything, and they wash in the sink beautifully -- even burnt pieces wash up with no effort. Gee, I sound like a commercial, don't I? They're expensive, but WELL WORTH IT! I gave one as a Christmas gift, and Casie went crazy over it!
Anyway, a Silpat is a PERFECT item to add to a person's wish list if a certain person was going to get married in, oh, say 9 months . . . .

LOL - I was thinking that as I was reading it!
Where do you get these things? About how much do they cost? Do you think for this recipe I could make do without one?
I usually use a stoneware sheet (Pampered Chef kind) to make anything anyway, and I've never had probs cleaning so far. Do the Silpats work with those too?
Hope I didn't bombard ya too bad!

Girlfriend, you can bombard me any day!
They're very expensive. I bought one of mine up in Canada 3 years ago, where (at the time) the exchange rate was such that I got a good deal. I got it at a kitchen supply store in B.C. Now, Martha Stewart sells it in her mail order catalog (marthastewart.com/catalog) for $24. The muffin "tin" was considerably more, but Martha doesn't sell it in her catalog. I think you'd do better at a discount house like, say, Target or WalMart.
The muffin tin is especially marvelous because it's so much easier to clean than standard muffin tins; I threw out all my old REAL tins when I got the Silpat. The cookie sheets are marvelous to "line" your baking sheet because they're so much easier to clean up than a baking sheet; as I said, the burnt pieces wipe right up. But if you're satisfied with the stoneware sheet you're using, why screw up something that works for you?

I just got in the mail my new J.C. Penney "Cooks" mail order catalogue, and they're having a sale. Surprise surprise. Check out web page . Their silicone 12-cup muffin pan sells for only $24.99 (originally $32.99) (oh, and it comes with a wire rack!), their square cake pan is only $12.99, and their baking mat is only $14.99 ($24.99 for the large size).
I'm just a font of useless knowledge, ain't I?!

LMBO - I got a loaf pan like that for Christmas!! I had no idea it was the same thing. I just used it last weekend for the first time - MUCH easier to clean!
This is the same material the mats are made of for cookie sheets? (they didn't show them on the jcpenny's website) I think I'll have to add that to my registry - if I ever get it started.

Mail order. Check out my "P.S." post in this thread, below, for prices I got from J.C. Penney's. Chef's Catalog has the baking sheets for $20 -- BUT WAIT! -- I see that Betty Crocker sells HERS for only $11.99! She also offers regular-size muffin "tins", large muffin "tins" and (the kind I gave for a Christmas gift) the heart-shaped muffin "tins" -- as well as bundt pans, loaf pans, madeline pans -- GOOD GRIEF! Check her out: web page
I always shop by mail order -- SOOOO much easier, AND I always find what I want! (I'd have made a damn good salesman, eh?)

Bev, Whenever I try to click on the Betty Crocker or Penney's web page you posted, it tells me these pages cannot be displayed. If I do a search, do I just put in Betty Crocker? What size is your baking pan? Thanks,
Joan

Gee, I've even seen these in the local drug store, but didn't know they were THAT good until Bev's endorsement.
Target has them. Amazon.com has them. Lot's of places have them.
If you go to Google.com and do a search you'll find them everywhere.
I didn't get her pages to display either so don't feel bad. She had to many ADB's with canned frosting today to be with it

Sorry about that. I'm computer illiterate. It's from all that Southern cooking I used to eat.
My Pantec (Canadian) baking sheet is 11x17, and my Silpat baking sheet is 11-1/2 x 16-1/2 (the same size as the one Betty Crocker offers for sale). The best selection and the best prices I've found so far are Betty Crocker's.
If you go into the internet, her web site is www.BettyCrocker.com

Do you think the Betty Crocker brand is as good as Silpat?

Joan, I think they're all the same. The Canadian version of Silpat that I have works just as well, even though it was much cheaper. It's like buying Kleenex brand instead of Costco Special. It's still tissue, Dahling!

That's because you've been eating to many ADB's with HFCF (high fat canned frosting)
