but would really like to try to make some sort of easy tofu dish. I attempted to marinate firm tofu in soy sauce last night and stir-fry it, but I absolutely hated the taste of it. I have actually never had tofu before, so this was a first for me. Does anyone have any suggestions for some quick, easy ideas on maybe grilling tofu or something? Can you use the George Foreman grill to grill it? I did a search on the boards but didn't locate anything along this line? I was kind of thinking of trying it as a sandwich. Thanks for any help you might be able to give me!!! )

Tofu is great stuff. It really has no taste of its own, it absorbs the seasonings you put on it. I used to make an incredible tofu chili that my hubby was always asking for. The seasonings were a little too powerful for my tummy, though, so I stopped making it.
You might consider starting out with something really yummy -- for example, in this diet board you'll find a recipe that Kree posted just a month ago for "Ultimate Non-Dairy Chocolate Pudding" using silken tofu, sugar, cocoa, vanilla and salt -- it tastes exactly like a mousse; absolutly incredible. Also, the day after Christmas JoanMarie posted a recipe for Chocolate Tofu Pie, also using silken tofu, that I'm anxious to make.
For me, personally, however, I don't think I can bring myself to eat a tofu sandwich. Ew.
Hope this helps.
Bev.

I love Tofu. I don't know if it's an acquired taste or not... I'm not much of a chef either, but I've had a good barbeque tofu sandwich, and I know you can buy marinaded tofu at the health food store to make sandwiches out of. It's also very good in stir fry. Like Bev said, Tofu absorbs whatever flavor you put it in. This is why soy sauce tofu doesn't sound that good... soy sauce is just very salty to me! Good luck!

Ooh, I didn't know about the "pre-marinated" tofu! That might be something for me to try. I'm not very good at figuring out which spices go with what (I need a "Cooking For Dummies" book!!") so that pre-marinated stuff sounds like something for me! I can't tell you how nasty that soy-sauce-only tofu was!! Thanks again for your help!!

You can also take plain tofu, marinate in a teriyaki sauce (not just plain soy sauce) then broil till the top bubbles. This is my favorite way to eat just plain tofu.

I have a friend who has a recipe for tofu bacon. Io'll try to get it from her and put it on the board. It's pretty good.

One easy tofu sandwich is to freeze a block of firm tofu until it is solid, thaw it, press it between two plates with a weight on top like a heavy book, then slice it and marinate it in barbecue sauce. Once it has marinated for awhile, bake it right in the sauce until it is heated through and serve it on sandwich buns with pickles, just like "real" barbecue.
Another good one is eggless egg salad, made with crumbled firm tofu, low-fat mayonnaise, your favorite mustard, finely chopped celery and parsley, grated carrot, pickle relish if you like it, and some turmeric for color. Eat it on safe white sandwich bread (Rudi's Organic Bakery is good), with lettuce if you can tolerate it.
Tofu that is sold already marinated and baked is good sliced thinly like cheese and layered in a sandwich with your favorite safe condiments and vegies, such as low-fat mayo, your favorite mustard, pickle slices, etc.
Two good tofu cookbooks are the revised edition of _Tofu Cookery_ by Louise Hagler and _The Giant Book of Tofu Cooking_ by K. Lee Evans and Chris Rankin.
