This is one of my favorite, traditional South African, recipes and is great comfort food for any winter's eve, but I was wondering if it is IBS safe the way it is now? I've done the obvious substitutions changing the margarine to Canola oil and the 2 eggs to egg whites, but is there anything I missed and should change as well?
I'm also worried that with changing the margarine to oil the mixture might be a wee bit to sloppy, any suggestions to counter act this?
Dumpling Mixture Ingredients 500ml water 15ml baking powder 1ml salt 4 egg whites 125ml soy milk
Sauce 1 liter hot water 250ml sugar 15ml Canola oil (original recipe called for 15ml margarine) 5ml cinnamon 2ml salt
And cinnamon sugar to sprinkle over the top.
Sieve flour, baking powder and salt together. Add oil, eggs and milk to the mixture. Set mixture aside.
Mix sauce ingredients together in large oven proof bowl. Stir the sauce mixture until sugar is dissolved.
Add spoonfuls of the dough to sauce. Dip spoon into warm water before every scoop to stop the mixture from sticking to it. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, cover, and bake at 180C 40 minutes

These sound really yummy. Would have to convert the measurements, etc. I wonder if you could use dairy free butter instead of the oil. Not sure of the fat content though. Is the oil/butter supposed to go in the dumpling mix or the sauce?

I was just looking over the recipe and realised that not only had I left out the flour, but also the margarine for the mixture ingredients.
This is why one should never post right after seven hours of night shift internship. It makes the mind play funny tricks.
It's the oil in the dough mixture that I'm worried about. The mixture should be a bit runny, but I'm worried that 30ml of oil will make it resemble the insides of an oil refinery.
Btw I think one could leave out the margarine in the sauce, it shouldn't make much of a difference to the taste.
Here's the correct version:
Dumpling Mixture Ingredients 500ml flour 15ml baking powder 1ml salt 30ml Canola oil(original recipe called for 30ml margarine) 4 egg whites 125ml soy milk
And cinnamon sugar to sprinkle over the top.
Sauce 1 liter hot water 250ml sugar 15ml Canola oil (original recipe called for 15ml margarine) 5ml cinnamon 2ml salt
