We had a little excitement this afternoon! I was working on our desktop PC, surfing some websites about magic (we saw a guy doing magic tricks yesterday, and I've always wonder how they DO THAT!!). As I'm reading, the computer screen starts flickering. I say to myself, "Self, that's weird," and continue, but it gets worse. I think to myself, "Self, that's pretty ironic that a site about magic is causing these weird things to happen. Wouldn't it be funny if it really was something they have the site rigged up to do?"
But I wasn't enjoying the flicker, and didn't want it to trigger a migraine so I closed Internet Explorer and started a game of Freecell (that's a computer solitare game, Bevvy). The flickering stopped for a few minutes, then started in again and got worse. Finally the picture turned itself inside out or some darn thing, accompanied by ominous crackling and popping from the back of the monitor, and finally this little streak of evil smelling smoke rose from the back. At this point, (I have a terrible phobia about electricity from a bad childhood experience), at this point, I lept to my feet and turned that monitor off faster than you can say "Jack Rabbit!" (Never thought I'd use that expression but it seems to fit here!)
OF COURSE Andy wasn't home, they never are when you need em, so I called him on his cell right away and started babbling hysterically at him. I asked if I should turn off the whole computer, which I was afraid to do for fear of messing something up, but he said yes and helped me figure out which button it was. We hung up and I went running out of that room so fast, you'd have thought the hounds of hell were after me!
I was shaking like a leaf and my mouth was literally dry with fear. I grabbed a Diet Coke and a Carr's Cookie just to calm my nerves, then ate two pieces of Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate -- see how we immediately go for the bad stuff under stress??!!
I couldn't remember if Andy said he was coming right home and I didn't want to go to the back of the house in case there was further spontaneous combustion so I called his cell again and babbled hysterically some more. He assured me he was only blocks away and would be home within moments. He asked, "Are you okay?" meaning was I totally freaked out or was I my usual rational calm self. I informed him that I was NOT okay and he better get his butt home SOON!!
And the SMELL!! Electrical fires are THE WORST because of that awful smell. It was throughout the front of the house so I opened all the window and turned on the exhaust fan. It's been two hours and I can still smell it a little.
I was ready to grab the fire extinguisher we keep in the kitchen if I saw actual flames, but I didn't -- just the snap crackle pop and the noxious smoke. I'm just SO GLAD it happened while one of us was home to notice it. We might have burned the place down!
Anyway, that's my tale of woe for today. I can really do without experiences like this if it's all the same to the rest of you. But at least Andy's not too upset. This gives him the excuse he needs to buy one of those new flat screen monitors! He's already out shopping for it right now!! (The term "delayed gratification" might as well be in a foreign language for him!!)
Just wanted to share my stress with everyone. Hope some of you find it entertaining or amusing!! But as my new signature says, at least it's still a good day, cause there's no doctors with needles coming after me!!

Hi Laura Sue,
I logged on because I wanted to say Congrats on making 6 months and then saw your post.
You poor thing. I know you must have been scared out of your wits. Yes your post did give us some laughs too but I know how nervous you must have been especially because you were by yourself. Having been having a lot of computer problems myself now when it makes weird noises will be thinking about what you said! If that didn't give you the D you MUST surely be on the road to recovery with the IBS!!
Thought you should celebrate today but not that kind of excitement.LOL The only good part of this episode is you'll get a new flat screen so now you can remember that's your 6 month anniversary present.
Hope the rest of your day was good. Just wanted you to know I was thinking of you!

Laura,
Such excitment. Glad it wasn't any worse and that hubby wasn't upset. With mine, any old excuse to buy something new for the computer will do.
Amazing what chocolate will do for stress.

Hi Laura: I just want to say that I'm sorry you had such a horrifying experience today with the computer. You made my day though. The way you put everything that happened, I was almost in tears I was laughing so hard. Not only that, I was laughing loudly! Good luck with the new flat screen...that's what I have and I love it!

Hey, Janey and Becky, thanks!! I'm looking at the GORGEOUS new flat screen right this very minute. It is SO CLEAR and crisp, it's like the other one was smeared with Vaseline or something. It's AMAZING!! And since Andy is really getting into his digital photography, this will be so great for him.
Glad I made you laugh!!

Oooh... flat screen. I'm jealous! I got a new moniter when my old one started dimming out to the point of unreadability. I didn't get a flat screen though.
