What is your ritual in public rest rooms to avoid germs?

I was just curious what are some of the things we do in public rest rooms to avoid germs.

Here's what I do:
put TP or one of those "sanitary seat tissues" on the seat.....
put TP in the bowl (just laying on the water) to avoid "splash back".....
sometimes I'll flush before I sit....just in case it wasn't flushed well after the last person.....
roll out enough towel before I wash my hands....
wash my hands....
grab towel and dry hands...
turn off water with towel.....
open door with towel.....toss towel in trash as I hold door open with foot.

You forgot one. Always roll up your pant legs before "dropping trou"! We have NO idea what's on that floor.

I do all that, and flush with my foot too, for the non-auto ones. My friend taught me that one.

Ohmigosh ladies!

Honestly if I worried about germs I would never stop having attacks. I think there is so many other things in this world to worry about...why stress yourself over germs????

I mean if the washroom is particularly terrible I will "hover" but definitely I don't get all worried about it! LOL

I think you gals need to relax! LOL

Canadian restrooms (or that's washrooms to you, right?) must be cleaner.

I agree, Mags.....most public restrooms I've been in are very worthy of "germ anxiety". Especially with our touchy tummies....a bad case of germs on top of it all....it's definatly worth the effort to avoid them at all costs.

I read this and had one thought.... aren't YOUR hands dirty when you grab the towel before you wash?

I wash hands....leave the water on.... get towels by using my elbow to push down the lever.... dry hands.... turn off water with towel, open door with towel.... throw towel toward garbage

The only thing I do admit to doing is not touch esculator "handles".

One of my best friends was a lab tech and in University did a study on the germs here. She told me enough that would disgust me out of it!!! LOL

PS - Our "washrooms" must be cleaner though LOL

OK, but isn't your problem that the germs from the people who DON'T wash their hands...what would a person who didn't wash their hands want to do with the paper towel dispenser ???

I do understand the grabbing the handle of the door with paper towel to combat all those people who didn't wash their hands...although I don't do this either because I haven't been able to figure out one thing...what are you supposed to do with the paper towel after you open the door???

I don't grab the towel before I wash....I roll it out using the lever or handle, then I wash my hands....then grab the clean towel that I rolled out, tear it off of dispenser, dry hands, and turn off water with towel in hands.....It's easier to just show you.

Well, statistically, the first stall in the bathroom is the least used stall. So I just use that one. Past that I'm not concerned.

LOL Lana!! Ok I'll stop laughing now......*snickers* Ok well I, personally, could care less since I'm at school all day and there's no escape from germs! But if I'm in a horribly nasty bathroom at a gas station or something, I'll sit in my hands and then wash them really well. But anyways, at our airport there are awesome toilet seats where the paper things are attached to the seat, and each time that the toilet is flushed, the paper automatically slides over and there's new paper for the next person. isn't that nifty??????? But you know what? There's more germs on the mouth of a public phone than there is on a toilet seat. Because think about it, people wear pants all day (hopefully) and their butts never do anything! LOL

LOL Well when I'm around 800 kids all day, there's no escape!! So I don't think one stall that 20 people have been in is gonna kill me now!!

Ok Mags thats the one I was going to say. That I use my foot to flush the toilet. But first If I'm in that not much of a hurry, I pre-flush.Just to make sure that it is working properly. Then put tp on seat ,do what I have to do, use tp to open door, then wash hands, use paper towel to open door, then use PURELL to disinfect hands. Not saying that all Canadian restrooms are cleaner... Sue

Lol, you girls are hilarious! Shell, I can just imagine you yelling at people to get their dirty hands away from your toweling!

It's actually very ironic that this topic came up, because just yesterday I went to a "bloodborne pathogens" seminar that's required for people working with kids in NY state. The professor talked about this very thing! Well, she discussed all the ways you can catch diseases in general, but the bathroom was covered. It was actually gross all the things she mentioned that I never really thought about. I don't know if I ever want to go out in public again!

You all are too funny!!! LMBO right now. The most important thing when washing hands is to wash them for 10-15 seconds and wash with fingers pointing down. And never shake the water off your hands.

Just some tips I learned in Nursing School.

Urggh! But If you don't then all the water runs down your arms when you are getting the towel out of the dispenser.

And so......this is why we should get the towel ready before we wash our hands! LMBO

Getting the towel ready is really important. I never touch the faucet after I wash my hands -- it ain't clean! -- if I did, I'd just get my hands dirty all over again. I have the towel ready, so I dry my hands quickly after washing -- yes, the water is still running, THEN I turn the water off WITH THE TOWEL, not my nice clean hands. I use the towel to open the door, then toss into the trash. (Ever notice how the trash basket is always close to the door? That's why, folks!)

Yes, the trash is usually close to the door.....or you can practice your free throw shots and try to hit a three pointer from across the room. Or...the one that gets me are those trash cans with the flippy floppy door on them that you have to push...in that case I just throw the towel on top or on the floor near the trash. I aint touchin nottin!

Oh! So YOU'RE the one who keeps throwing your dirty icky towel on top of the trash, only to have it fall on the floor?!?

I hate those trash cans too. I use my left elbow to open the door, then toss the towel in with my right hand. The problem I have is when the trash can is stuffed full, then I have to be real careful that my fingers don't touch the other towels when I toss mine in. Takes a lot of dexterity. In such cases, this is a good time for me to put on my gloves.

I could not believe the awsome bathroom I was in recently...it was at a new building at a University...the toilet flushed by itself, you run your hands under the faucet and water comes out and then you wave your hand in front of the paper towel and it comes out on its own too! I was so impressed! must have costed a fortune!

Girl after my own heart....

Guess no one here has ever heard of Hand sanitizer gel....like Purel. I have a little bottle of it with me always, use before I go in, and when I come out, then I don't have to fool with all the nonsense with towels and soaps and doors, etc. My daughter-in-law put me onto it when it first came out, about 7 years ago. When we took the kids to eat out, she'd wipe the high-chair tray down with it, then they could eat their finger foods right off the tray. They NEVER got sick......
I've been using the stuff ever since!!!

I'll bet if you looked around it had automatic aromatherapy dispensers as well....a spray of it into the air every so many minutes. The hospitals here are starting to do that, especially in the halls. Nice....

My school has ancient ones. They smell like cinnamon. One time the one in the main bathroom broke and it wouldn't turn off, so we had a steady stream of cinnamon coming out all day. NO ONE went in there all day lol It was literally sickeningly sweet

Meike will not go to the bathroom in public now because of automatic toilets. I guess a lot of kids are afraid of them. The noise in public bathrooms bother her too. She will start screaming and covering her ears because of the echoing in the bathrooms. Yes, she has really sensitive ears and has been like that since birth.
