You are so right Kree. Worrying and IBS are a bad couple; they just feed off each other. And the worrying can be so irrational. When I get an attack I worry that it is something more serious and I won't be able to take care of my kids, even though I know it is just IBS. How irrational!

I guess we're all a little irrational sometimes, aren't we? It's part of being human!

Well I think I might worry as much as you. I feel the same where no matter where I go. I make sure that I find out where the bathroom is immediately when visiting a new place. I started having anxiety years back and IBS is now an offspring of it. Now it runs my life most of the time. We travel a lot and it is frightening sometimes to be out. Controlling my surroundings is a must for me and went I don´t have that...I get the stomach problems. I can usually calm myself down enough but sometimes the mind and belly have to go crazy. Another reason for the intensity of my IBS even more so is we just moved to Mexico from California and that has put me into another nervous space. I´m hanging in there though. Hoping this new website I stubbled upon (Heather seems great by the way) will change my life.

Debby, sounds like me too. Alot of us sound alike. I´ve learn to breathe and talk my way out of the panic bathroom run but sometimes nature calls. I worry being stuck in a room with others and cant leave or somewhere on a boat, car, beach with no bathrooms with others i dont know.
Maybe next time I feel bad I´ll remember Im not alone.

Wow, Masayo, you sound JUST LIKE ME -- before I did the hypnotherapy program! Actually, that's WHY I did it. I had terrible anxiety, which had gotten so bad I wouldn't leave the condo. My hubby couldn't even get me to go for a walk with him. One time I ventured out, got half way down the block, and BAM! Diarrhea! OMG! I barely made it back in time -- I had to run all the way back to the condo. After that, I NEVER left -- I became a hermit.

Finally, I contacted Heather (it was before I came on the boards here). She turned me onto the hypno program. What a lifesafer! I just finished it last night -- 100 days -- and what a difference!

Go into the hypnotherapy board and check it out.

By the way -- WELCOME! Don't hesitate to ask any questions you want.

Bev

I moved into a new house last February, and had all this upheaval in my life, so I ordered the tapes. It is quite a committment, but I did it faithfully. I did not see any change in my IBS or anxiety at first, but I did start eating ALOT!! gained 10# rather fast???!!! But, then I started to notice, if we went somewhere, I didn't get that sick feeling in my stomach, or feel like I was looking for a bathroom right away. Gradually, I was calmer, more relaxed, laid back about change, and I have not taken any anxiety medicine in 6 months. Up until then, I was on and off for 13 years. Now, I have not flown for quite awhile, so that might require some xanax!! I was thinking about starting the program again, just because I think it is so very calming and this time of year leds to depression, if not careful. I love Michael's voice. So peaceful.........

I caught myself getting like this after I was diagnosed...I got to the point where I was always running to the bathroom even if I just thought I MIGHT need the loo SOMETIME in the near future! I was ridiculous. So I made myself wait to go the loo for as long as I could when I was somewhere safe (at home, in the office, etc). And then I guess it trained my body to stop panicking about the nearest bathroom! I can now need the loo slightly and still get on the tube to go to work.

Plus, Immodium should be a god (only kidding!).

I am such a deep thinker...and an analyst. I DEF. over-worry! In addition, having IBS gives you something to worry about (is my tummy too gugrly...do I look pregnant today...did someone smell my flatulence, etc.).

Between those two things and my irregular bouts of diarrhea (I'm IBS-C with the occasional D)...worrying is totaly a symptom! I'm doing the hypno tapes for the 2nd time...I think I'm getting better. I'll let you know when I'm finished.

Let us know, Nugget, if you decide to do them!

I LOVE Bev's emergency kit idea! Also, always carry rice cakes or something for the times you get hungry. I find when I get hungry and I don't eat right away, it spirals out of control and I end up overeating (that's what I get for ignoring my bod!)

I am so sorry to all of you who have bad docs! I have had over SIX bad docs in the past year! Still searching for a goodie!

When I find myself worrying, I try to use HEAT...on my back, my tummy, wherever. It just feels so RELAXING! I read a magazine, play with make-up (I'm not great at art...but make-up is my visual arts outlet ), I talk on the phone, read a book, do cross-stitching, write a letter to a friend, look outside at nature, spend some time with my plants, look up something new on goggle.com or howthingswork.com, listen to music (classical is WONDERFUL!), clean my house (yes, I find cleaning and organizing relaxing! LOL), drink tea/water, go eye-shopping at the mall (we have no money so I go just to look ), look at paintings, look through photo albums (esp. my wedding album!), do something nice for someone else, and chill out on the IBS BOARD with all of you!

I hope this inspires you, Nugget (and anyone else! ) to do some soul searching and find things that take you to another place far away from your troubles!

Oh, one more thing.... (I don't remember where I read this, but I find it VERY helpful!) Close your eyes. Picture a huge circle (mine is outdoors). Fill in the circle with whatever you want (mine is filled with grass). Picture yourself outside the circle to start. Then, go inside your cirlce of joy! Sometimes I go inside the circle and I just lay on the grass. Sometimes I go in and jump up and down. Sometimes I go in and twirl around and around like a 5 year old! This always help put me in a positive state of mind!

Any more tips from anyone? I can always use help in this area!

Love,
Ruchie

I think we are all in this together. Many people "map out" strategy before they go places - pack a kit of toilet paper and medicine etc. I can tell you all the establishments with "facilities" on my 18-mile drive to work. Learn to take deep breaths. Things usually work out. Try praying sometimes that helps. Relaxation tapes? Hang in there. Keep on talking to us here and you will grow strong! I have two handicapped children so I know what worrying can be like too. Ice fishing sounds cold, by the way. Where I live, we rarely even get into the 30s.
