I have been getting episodes of awful abdominal pain every 3-4 months since Oct 2007. I have had every test and scan but nothing shows up. The docs keep saying they think I have IBS. Has anyone ever had IBS accompanied with pain so violent it caused chills and vomiting?

I know my pain can cause nausea, and one time I vomitted from the pain. Chills, every-once-in-a-while. But not every time I get an attack.
I think you should see a GI specialist for this. Do you have any accompanying diarrhea or constipation? Do you get bloated with cramping and mild to excrutiating pain?

Hi Kappy, Thanks for writing. It doesn't happen every time I get an attack either but it has happened every 3 months since Oct 2007 and every month since April 2009. May of 2008 my husband took me to the e/r because I vomited 4 times. I am with my second GI doc now. I just want to know if other people with IBS out there have experienced this. I have never heard of it which is why I have undergone so many tests. It is so frustrating!

You are correct; the vomiting is not usual in most IBSers. I hope some more members will post their experiences on this.
I'm sorry I can't be of more help!
HUGS, and I hope you find out more about this!

You should review the rome criteria for a IBS diagnosis. If you don't fit into this criteria then it's not IBS.
Vomiting isn't part of the IBS diagnosis but you can end up throwing up from the pain and exhaustion.

I have severe pain when I am empty or eat the wrong thing or maybe, nerves, but I have never had the chills or vomiting, ever. Be sure that this is not something else because, jees if it is something else, you really want to know so it can be treated right away.Doesn't sound like the flu either if it recurs so often. Just my 2-cents worth.I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you all for responding. I need to find out if anyone else with IBS has had vomiting because that is what the docs are thinking I have but I have never heard of vomiting with IBS.

Goldiloks, I'm sorry that you have been going through this hell for such a long time. When I first started feeling sick daily (Feb 08) I was throwing up at work about three days a week. But I think mine was caused by extreme nerves and stress over having to run out of my classroom everyday. After I got my symptoms under control and used yoga and the hypnotherapy cd's I haven't thrown up since. I agree with the others, do your other symptoms match with IBS? Let me know if you have any other questions...I'll try to share and help is possible. Amy

Hi Amy, Thanks for writing. The weird thing about my mystery illness is that I don't feel sick everyday. It comes on when I least expect it. Was your vomiting a followed by severe waves of pain and chills? That is how mine is. I do sometimes get the pain with no vomiting and think stress can contribute to it getting really bad. However I had an episode on my honeymoon in the least stressful place. I do believe I have some IBS. My mom had it. I have always had gas and bloating but not diarrhea followed by severe constipation because I have such a good diet due to my nutrition background. I have always listened to my body and for the most part avoid food that gives me discomfort. I go for a colonoscopy on Tuesday. After this I am considering a holistic doctor. Julie

Julie, My vomiting was accompanied with pain but with heat flashes instead of chills. I felt like my whole body was on fire. I have IBS-D, so that might be why. I hope your appointment on Tuesday goes well. Keep us posted! Good thoughts your way, Amy

There's more info at http://www.romecriteria.org/criteria/. Also you can search this site for more info - the search box is right at the top of of the page.
It is possible you have IBS as attacks can be excruciating and violent. So I would urge you to give heathers diet a try. Also try and keep a food diary you may find attacks a very much related to what yo eat. In particular you should avoid high fat foods, dairy, caffeine and too much insoluble fibre especially on a empty stomach.

Hi, I have IBS and when I have a very bad attack (usually when I'm finally able to have a bowel movement) I break out in a sweat, then chills, then vomiting. All this while trying to keep my butt on the toilet. This has become quite common for me, especially if I just can't resist that piece of red meat I know darn well I shouldn't have.
Hope this helps!

Thank you Deb this does help. I just got word from a New York GI doc of over 30 years that it is very common to vomit with IBS. In fact he has seen patients that actually have projectile vomiting with it.

Julie, IBS-D means I have ibs with diarrhea. I'm so thankful that it is mostly undercontrol. It was a grueling year I can tell you that much.
Feeling better at all? Amy
