I need some advise - a recent colonscopy showed I have severe diverticular disease and the MD said that 2/3 of my colon would have to be removed. I go see a surgeon for a second opinion on 10/19. Has anyone encountered anything like this. She also told me to go on a bland diet and eat refined sugar for the diverticular attacks.

My father had diverticulitis for years, and ultimately did have to have part of his colon removed - scar tissue built up so bad over the years that he had no choice about it at all. The surgery was definitely kind of a big deal, but he recovered well and lived a perfectly normal life afterwards. Actually, he hasn't had any diverticulitis since then.

A second opinion is always a good idea. Good luck.

I really don't know anything about this but I wanted to wish you good luck and I hope all goes well.

I always seek 2nd opinions for anything serious.

thanks for the info - bec it was a shcok when the doc told me that and I intend to get maybe even a third opinion. The divertular and IBS has been a part of everyday life for over 10 years. Thanks again.

My sister has diverticulitis and had to have part of her colon removed last fall. I remember her being in pain for the first few days but it was well worth it in the end. She hasn't had problems since the surgery and functions at full capacity.
