My uncle in Florida who is also my Godfather has had some heart trouble lately. He is about 78 years old and the hospital sent him home because he is too weak to undergo heart bypass surgery. The doctors don't know how long he has. They asked my aunt if he should be resuscitated if anything happens, and after consulting with a priest she decided against it. So this it it. I don't know how long he has but I ask you guys to keep him and my aunt in your thoughts and prayers.

That must have been a very difficult decision for your aunt to make. I would hope that someone had the courage to do that for me if I were in this situation.
Prayers for you and your family, Tommy.

I don't really have the time off to go see him right now. With the wedding and honeymoon coming up it is difficult. If and when he does pass I will try and go down to FL. Thanks for keep us in your thoughts.

Hi Tommy,
P's family were in exactly the same position two weeks ago. His 72 year old uncle had cancer and his heart medication (he had a heart condition too) wasn't working, he had one bad turn and the family (his wife and four grown up children) had to make that decision. They did. He died in hospital but they brought him home for three nights and had a very Irish wake. They all felt it was the right thing to do rather than to put his body through unnatural things. It made his death so much easier for them to deal with and his funeral really was a celebration of his life.
Your aunt is very strong to make the decision but it is one she will definitely not regret.

like I said it wasn't a sad funeral, it was a celebration of his life. Hope your family are doing OK.

PS It is so sweet the way you always spell Padhraig's name right, even though I have given up typing it at this stage as it looks so odd on screen! It always makes me smile, it's not an easy one to remember.

Well, I hope when the time comes for my uncle that we will celebrate his life as well.
I guess you can say the reason I always spell Padhraig's name correctly is because I have several Irish-American friends and some of their family have Irish-spelled first names. Plus, I am a stickler for spelling and pronouncing people's names correctly. Like, I hate when people say Christine when someone's name is Christina or Diane when that person is Diana. Just one of my pet peeves but I am happy it brings a smile to your face when I write his name correctly.

Oh sweetie, I am so sorry. But at least he is at home and will die there, not in the hospital.
This will be devastating for your aunt and I'm so sorry.

I agree Tommy, I hate that too.
My mother does not ever call anyone Maria, always Marie, even though their name is Maria, it drives me crazy!
Most of my close friends (and his!) can't spell his name because there are so many variations (Padraic, Padhraic, Padraig, Pauric, Pauraic etc etc) so it's unusual for someone other than family to get it right, therefore it always makes me smile.
what's great too is that you can even say it properly- and I've heard you in person!

you may be surprised though- sometimes the elderly can suddenly rally- they did this with my grandfather and then 3 months later did the bypass surgery he wasn't strong enough for originally.. he did miss our wedding during the whole thing, and my cousins a year later because he was still not up for the travel, but he's still with us 6 years later.. there is still hope.

That is good to hear Amie. From what I understand is that he has never lost consciousness and is completely aware of what is going on. Thanks for sharing your story, that was really good for me to hear.

This is such sad news about your uncle. He is only 78...that is very young by today's standards. My mom has a friend that had bypass surgery in his late 80's. My husband had one at 55.
I just wanted to mention hospice care if your uncle doesn't already have it. My dad was also sent home to die (several years ago) and we had hospice care and it was the best thing we could have ever done. They have a nurse come over every day to check on them and when they pass away all you do is call them and they take care of all the details so you don't have to deal with it at such a stressful time. Mu mom couldn't have done it without their help.
Anyway, just thought I would mention it.
I know this is difficult for you and your uncle will be in my prayers.

Thanks Barbie. He is having someone come in and see after him everyday. Sad thing is that my coousin has convinced her mm not to seek a second opinion on my uncle. It seems as if she just wants him to die because she sees him as a burden at this point. It is so sad. I wish they would see one more doctor.
