Anyone have fake nails?

I've never had them before but do like the way they look. I'm debating whether or not I should get them for the wedding. My only doubt is that I've heard they require maintenace and can damage your own nails.
Any input, good or bad? Thanks!

I used to get tips. The longer they are on your nails the more damage they will do. I had them for about 2 years and decided to stop - it took my nails about another year to firm up and get healthy again.
That being said - if I could afford it, I would go back to getting them done again! I loved them! I say go for it! If you don't want to keep up with them, you can always remove them after the wedding. That shouldn't cause tooo much damage. If you decided to keep them, you would need to go back about every two weeks for a fill - where they fill in the gap caused by your nails growing.
I would also recommend getting them done at a salon or spa, rather than at a walk-in place at the mall. Most of the walk-in places use a grinder and that WILL DEFINITELY damage your nails. They may be cheaper, but there is greater risk of infection and long term nail damage.

Thanks Michelle. I love the way they look (if they're not too long) but it's the damage I'm afraid of.
Could I take them off myself a week or so after the wedding (well, after the honeymoon)? In NYC there's a nail salon on almost evert block so I have lots of choice. LOL!

I had them put on ONCE for my wedding and they were awful! About 2 weeks after the wedding, I cut them shorter because I was moving. Several of them got riped off and really hurt and they did damage my nails under them even though I had them on for less than 3 weeks. I guess maybe if you decide to keep up with it, they might be ok but its too high maitance for me and my nails get damaged at work anyways!

You can take them off yourself. You'll just need to soak them (and I mean SOAK them) in an acetone-based nail polish remover (they usually tell you to use non-acetone remover when you have tips because it will make them unglue!). You will have to soak for a long time! Then you should be able to scrape them off using a cuticle stick or something similar. It's the acrylic overlay that you will be scraping - not the actual tip. The tip itself should pop right off after soaking.

I tried to take mine off myself and it hurt and made a big mess! If I ever choose to have them put on again, I'd definitely let a professional take them off as well.

I have acrylic nails...and have had them for about 10 years now. I have them all removed and a new full set put on every 6 months. BUT, the real nails are very weak and thin all alone..... but they are clean and I have never had an infection..... I have them filled and taken care of every 3 weeks.
I WOULD NOT put them on if it is just going to be temp because of the damage they can do.....it will take you some time for them to "thicken" back up and look nice again....but nothing that a few manicures could not fix....if you really have your heart set on them.
If you see someone in your everyday life that has them and they look nice, ask them where they get them done.

HUGE mistake, BUT! I have nice nails without them.. long, strong, and they took 6 months to regrow without the damage... not worth it for me.. I also don't love the look so would never have had them done permanently... if you like the looka nd don't have strong nails, go for it!

Thanks Michele. I am VERY low-maintenance so I am thinking there's no way I want to go through with this. I'll grow out my own nails!

I wore them for several years and enjoyed them very much. I took mine off last summer and it took about 8 months for my nails to return to normal. The nail bed is a little sensitive as the nail grows out.
If you want them ONLY for the wedding, I would suggest using good press on nails and not the acrylic.

I've had them and love the way the look but I hate how my nails hurt and are horribly thin after I take them off... I am suffering now because I just recently took them off for gardening season. It takes a commitment to keep them nice, at least one and a half hours every two weeks. I first got them when I was dressing up for work and had to wear pantyhose... my own nails would always run the hose and I was spending a fortune on hose so I splurged on nails and actually saved money in the long run. I just got tired of the time it takes to sit and breath in all the acetone every other week... also I used to worry about the women who actually worked in the nail shop that I went to, the acetone fumes must cause some sort of problem long term. But with all that said... I love the way they look... oh how we suffer to look good!!!

I bit my nails something terrible. I quit in November and had let them grow and got a french manicure just about every 3 or 4 weeks. They looked simply gorgeous! My nails are very thin and break and split easily but if I kept them maintained they stayed real nice. Well then we got the puppy and I didn't have time for the "pamering" of the nails. So guess what? Yep, I started biting them again. Having nails is VERY high maintanence, not to mention expensive! I would suggest going to the drug store or Walmart and getting a set of glue on ones. Not press on with tape ones, actual glue on. Whenever I had a special occasion I'd get them and do them myself. You can clip them to the size you want and they probably will last a week or so. They won't damage yours nails since you'll have them on for such a short time. Acrylic nails are way too high maintenance plus you can risk getting bacteria and junk under them. I know some people said they never had a problem with that but I truely never wanted to even chance it. I cut chicken up too much and it would get down in there I think. Let me know what you decide!

just tips. They looked amazing, a permanent french manicure, done in an Asian Nail Salon on Park Lane. BUT when I got them off (a) they took most of my nails with them so it hurt and (b) it looked AWFUL.
So for the wedding I just let my natural nails grow and then painted them pale pink-
This is what they looked like:
And here's the fake ones from the engagement time:(rest of photo awful but good close up of nails)
The real ones really do look better I think

Thanks Lisa. Maybe I will consider the drug store glue on type. I looked at them yesterday and there's a dozen different brands out there.

Thanks Sinead. I think that's probably what I'll do too! My own nails can grow pretty long, they're just not too strong so they usually break off. But maybe I'll try to keep them nice and do a pale polish for thr wedding.

They'll look perfect. Sometimes the fake nails with french can look too white if your dress is not snow white too.
I kept my nails painted and filed for the couple of months before the wedding and they got strong because of that. To be perfectly honest my nails are only properly visible in two photos from the wedding day and neither of them is going into the album. Also, not sure if you wear contacts but I found them difficult with the fake nails.

Also you will need to book your false tan, highlights, buy your stockings/pantyhose, sort out the right footwear, your headpiece veil or headdress, your makeup (you do want it to be just right) etc etc.
In the months before our wedding we wrote the to do lists and realised that the bride beautification really was a full time job!

I have had acrylic nails for a VERY long time. It's not vanity, believe it or not, but necessity. My own nails are paper-thin and very painful. They break off before they grown out, below the quick. It ain't pretty.
I have fills done once a month. I used to have to have it done twice a month, but I found a new manicurist who uses a better product that lasts twice as long. It's called Tammy Taylor. The old product was OPI. It costs me $25 for a fill, or $25 once a month.
I have never had an infection but I did get mold once, from all the rowing I was doing, my hands constantly in water. Mold happens when water sneaks between the natural nail and the artificial nail and can't get out. It's an easy remedy and caused no problem if taken care of immediately.
If you have nails of your own that are not paper-thin like mine and don't hurt like mine, then I would not recommend acrylic nails. They have something else out now -- I think it's plastic -- that's less "intrusive" but isn't nearly as strong as acrylic. My natural nails are so bad that I can't have anything but acrylic.
Whatever you do, don't do them yourself; see a good manicurist and have them professionally done. First ask what product she uses. Then budget for that amount at least once a month. I'm lucky, though, because few gals can go that long between fills. Tammy Taylor is a great product that works well for me, so I only need to go every 4 weeks; I've gone 5 weeks before, but my nails were all lifting by the 5th week.
I did learn how to do fills myself because there are times when a nail will break, and you need to fix it immediately. If it breaks below the quick, it's very painful.
Really, if your own nails are half decent, if you have ANY "free edge" at all, don't do the acrylics. Just go to a good manicurist and get a nice natural manicure for the wedding; you wouldn't ever be sorry.

uses a lot of polish but it works... 8 day cycle... first day after the shower push back cuticles, put on stadard 3 coats of polish.
then for next 6 days add 1 coat of clear polish after pushing cuticles back, then on the 8th day, remove all polish, leave off for 24 hours and start over... it works!

i got mine done for my wedding, and i've gotten one fill, it was $20 for the fill, well like 18, my daughter wanted her nails painted too...but ifyou don't mind paying the extra money it's fun....but i don't like the thought of paying $40 a month...so i'm gong to take mine off, and just paint them myself....if i had more money i would do it all the time though!! they make me feel pretty, oh so pretty!!
