I got the results of the blood work I had done last week and my cholerstrol is 314, yikes! I knew it was going to be high because it runs in my family but I wasn't expecting it to be that high.

I started a very low fat diet as soon as I heard and I started exercising more than I was. I sure wasn't exercising as much as I should be which I found out this morning when I got on my stationary bike.

I made an appointment with a family practice doc for next week to discuss what she wants to do, diet and exercise or meds.

Anyone else take meds for cholestrol? If so, how do they effect your IBS?

I have a high number as well, its over 200 but my tri glycerides are also high so they say not to worry about it. I did notice when I was eating oatmeal every morning, it did go down some!

I have dh on this and his folks are doing it - we know 2 friends whose cholesterol was lowered SIGNIFICANTLY with no change in diet or anything else. Now I do advocate diet changes and meds if necessary, I'm just saying this is an easy thing to try and who knows, it might help...

Mix the following in a picture

1 can frozen pure purple grape juice
1 can frozen pure apple juice
1 cup apple cider vinegar
6 cups water

Drink 2 oz a day. I know juice isn't great for IBS but 2 oz is nothing and after a meal should be okay on the tummy.

Otherwise sorry and hope you respond well to the doctor's suggestions!

I appreciate the ideas. I will definitely try to juice drink. I can drink juice with no problems so it is worth a try. I have gone back to my oatmeal every morning and I didn't even think that acacia would help but it is fiber so . . .

Thanks again!

Janey, a person I work with has had problems with his cholesterol. it runs in his family. He eats well and excercises and still has had a problem. But, he has found this supplement to be helpful. He has taken this for the past three months and his cholesterol has decreased enough for the his Dr. to hold off precrisbing him meds.

Check it out:

I know someone who is taking cholesterol meds, and has for some time; I'll alert the person and see if they want to respond.

You're on the right path with the diet and exercise. If you can tolerate flaxseed oil, check it out (you can also do a search 'cause we've discussed it considerably in the Diet Board); it's the essential Omega 3 and 6 oil that's the good HDL that helps lower cholesterol.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Hi Janey,

Several years ago I had a cholesterol reading of about 225. My doc put me on Lipitor and within a month it went down to 180. It was fantastic. I have to take a blood test every 6 months to be sure there is no problem with my liver. Lipitor can possibly cause liver problems but it's rare. As long as you do regular blood tests you are safe.

The best part is that I have no side effects, even though there are a list of them. I usually am very sensitive to meds but this one has worked great for me. No tummy problems from it at all.

Of course, diet & exercise are very important, too. And, I forgot to mention that I eat oatmeal every morning.

Good Luck

Janey,

I don't know much about lowering chloesterol levels but I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully with the nice weather it will be easier to get out for some walks!

Went to the doctor today. This was the first time I have seen her and I liked her. Very straight forward but listened to my concerns. She put me on Lipitor. She said at my age and such a high cholestrol count there was no reason for me not to be on meds. So, I am going to give it a try.

I am also having an MRI on Thursday morning because I have been experiencing tremors in my right hand. The doctor didn't seemed concerned but said she just wanted to make sure. I didn't ask her what it could be. I don't want to worry myself if nothing is wrong.

She asked me about my IBS and I told her about my diet and Heather's books. My memory is so bad I couldn't remember Heather's last name. I couldn't believe it. When I go for my follow-up appt. I am going to bring the info.

Hope you all are having a great day!
