I've had a persistant cough for about 11 weeks now. At first my GP prescribed antibiotics which i took reluctently and of course it affected my IBS badly so i stopped. I have tried countless Cough medicines but most i am allergic to as they make me ill, i cannot take anything with codeine or alcholol in it etc.

The real problem i have with this cough is i have been getting severe stomach pains, wich causes stomach muscles to feel like they've been ripped and the last few days have had a new pain on the very low left side which makes me double up in agony, oh and i hardly sleep either.

Sorry this is so long. I just wondered if anyone can recommend something for this non-productive cough, it's like i have to force myself to cough sometimes for several minutes before it stops.

My husband suffered a persistant cough for over a year and finally wound up with pneumonia that sent him to the doctor. He was recommended to a pulmonary specialist and had CAT scans, MRI's, barium swallow tests ect...problem was in his right lung...a brochiectasis...basically a damaged place in the lung that can't clear properly. He will suffer with this chronically from now on unless it worssens dramatically. At the point he can't get well with antibiotics, they reomove that damaged part of the lung.

I'd ask for tests. Could be anything from esophogeal problems to lungs. Better safe than sorry. A pulmonary specialist will know what tests to do. Hope you find an answer!

I second BamaGirl's advice - you need a doctor who will do tests and get this resolved. A pulmonologist, allergist, ENT, some specialist who can address this. Eleven weeks is too long to have a cough - you really need to find someone who will help you figure out what's going on.

You should also be aware that severe reflux may sometimes trigger a cough, so be sure whatever doctor you see knows you have digestive problems.

In the meantime, I find that a hot honey and lemon mixture (if your IBS can tolerate it) helps soothe a cough so I can fall asleep: 1 Tablespoon of honey, juice from about 1/8 lemon, fill mug with boiling water. Drink it as hot as you can stand it right before bedtime.

HTH.

Are you on any new meds? I had a cough for months last year and it turned out to be an allergy to my blood pressure med. When it was changed the cough stopped. Good luck.

Until then, there is something called Delsym which is for coughs that works well for my family. Not sure if you are allergic to it but it can't hurt to look. It is OTC.
