As some of you may remember, we had a barking dog next door that drove us bonkers. When I finally called and complained, the renters moved out without a word, and I felt horrible.

The new tenants are in the process of moving in, but they're taking forever. They've been gone a very long time and left their dog outside in the freezing cold and snow, chained to the porch railing. For over 24 hours now, we have listened to his constant crying, and it's killing me. Hubby went over there to check and make sure he has food and water and gave him several treats, but the dog turned the treats down, hoping instead that Don would save him.

I told Don I thought this was animal cruelty, but he disagrees. We haven't met our new neighbors yet, and we want to start off on the right foot, but I can't stand seeing an animal suffer. How can he live outside in that freezing cold with no human contact for over 24 hours, with no help in sight?

This is breaking my heart. Don doesn't want me to do anything, but I told him I will tolerate it only a short while longer, and then I'm calling the owner of that property and letting them know that this poor animal is being mistreated.

Any other suggestions, guys? HELP!

Bev

In my opinion I think that's mistreatment! I can see a few hours when you are at work, but moving? My dog would come with me everywhere if I were moving...is there an animal shelter (i.e. spca) you can call to report? I guess to avoid negative feeling, mention it to the landlord. Is there food left out for him? I feel bad, I could never do that

That poor baby!

Can you call the owner and ask if they are ok....say that you thought maybe something happened to them since they'd left their dog like that? That could be a good excuse to call. Heck, could something have happened to them? Why on earth would someone do something like that?

I don't know what you could do to improve the dog's situation beyond suggesting that the dog deserves more attention/care. It's very disturbing.

Yes, I'd call.

I've had the same problem, but then my old neighbours were loony!

Call the landlord and ask if he'll contact the renters on your behalf (I'm guessing he won't be able to give you their contact details). Say you're worried about them as they've left their dog for so long...and how about offering to look after the dog i they're having difficulties?

If they say no to that I'd say they're mistreating their dog! But give them the chance to do the right thing so you don't have to get off on the wrong foot.

And Melissa, there ARE doggy sitters! Not group daycare (can you imagine the chaos) but professional people who look after dogs. Archie stayed with one last summer when we had to go away without him and it was great. And they could always put the dog into kennels till they've moved in properly!

on the rare day that we get a freeze here, the news is all over pat owners at minimum putting their dogs in the garage. Plants too...there is no excuse for leaving a dog out in the snow.

Shame on them!

This breaks my heart My vet says not to leave them out more than half an hour in 20 degree weather, even if they are running around. I would be so tempted to take him in for awhile.

My neighbor used to leave her boxer in a kennel ALL day in the garage, in 90 degree weather. She would 'crack' the garage door, as if that helped with the heat. I would cry whenever I saw that dog in the kennel, and when they weren't home I'd go and play with him and get him new water. He died when he was 1 year old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I felt sick when I heard that he died...and the dumb neighbors couldn't figure out why.

I am the world's worst when it comes to animal cruelty.

As soon as I see anyone tying a dog anywhere without shelter, warmth, food and water and I am ALL OVER THEIR @#q##!!!!

This is a very touchy subject for me, I'm sorry. I hate animal cruelty more than anything and I have started more fights over animals.....I cannot watch the news when I hear stories come on about animal cruelty because my blood pressure goes sky high!!!!!!!

I am a real estate appraiser and anytime I appraise a residence and see animals there that have been mistreated, or are being mistreated, I get very angry. Unfortunately, I see this alot, but I can do something about it.

I go right outside, and while I am measuring the outside of the home, I'm on the phone with the humane society. I do not play around with this at all!!!!

Bev, if I were in your shoes right now, I would have already made the call and cussed your neighbors from one ear to the other, but that's just me. Please don't let that dog continue to suffer in the freezing cold. I know they have fur, but they can only tolerate so much cold before they start shivering too. It's too cold and they are so helpless. They don't know.......they rely on us to take care of them.

Please, please, I beg of you to do something.......anything. Take him a blanket to curl up in, at least, if you're not going to call anyone.

Thanks, hon!! I feel soooooo sad for that poor dog. If it were me, I would have already taken him away from them......get him set up in a foster home who will take care of him and love him until he can be adopted.

This is just how serious I am about animal cruelty......any person that mistreats their animal like that and doesn't give a @#$% about them, I don't want to be socializing with, anyway, so don't worry about getting off on the wrong foot.

Wow! What a response! But, uh, gee guys, how do you REALLY feel about this?!

Thanks, I appreciate your input. I agree with all of you; my problem is my hubby, who, above all, wants to get off on the right foot with these neighbors. Originally, I felt the same way as he, but now I don't give a damn. I mean, how can I have any consideration for someone who could treat any creature like that?

I couldn't sleep last night; I was up 'till 3:30. (Don't ever eat chocolate before bedtime; what was I THINKING?!) And of course I was Gladys Cravitz all day and all night.

The Shabby Shack Trash returned at 10:15 p.m. and finally took The Dog inside. I was so overjoyed, I yelled at Abner, but he ignored me. At 2:30, the Shabby Shack Trash left, turned off all the lights except the porch light, and took The Dog with them. YAAAAAY!

I was finally able to get to sleep at 3:30. Between then and now (8:00 a.m.), the Shabby Shack Trash returned and are there now. The Dog is outside again, but not crying, and at least I know they're there.

If it happens again, I'm definitely calling the owner of the property down in Mt. Vernon, and to hell with the tenants. They don't deserve my friendship.

Again, thanks to all of you. You're a great bunch.

You're doing the right thing, Gladys! As long as your new neighbors aren't a witch and some dude named Dustbin or Derwood, they should know that they can't get away with treating the poor dog like that.

Hey Sis,

I had to take a minute out of my busy day at The Sweat Ship to tell you that I'm glad you let me know about the Shabby Shack dog. I really felt soooooo bad about him being out in that freezing cold and chained up, too.

Makes you wonder sometimes why people even get pets if they don't intend on taking care of them. I consider a pet part of the family and you wouldn't treat a family member like that.

I think you should definitely call the landlord if this inhumane treatment continues.

Well, my sweet little Annie will be sleeping on her warm blankie on the floor at the foot of our bed as she does every night after lots of goodnight hugs & wet, slobbery kisses.

You COULDN'T have said it better! My poor little dogbert Kodiak was mistreated before he got to us, and we are very good to him to make up for how he suffered. It makes me embarrassed to be human for what people will do to animals (and to each other, for that matter), and it takes strong, caring, knowledgable people to stand up to unjust caretakers. Yea for us.

Wow, how did I NOT see this yesterday?? Sorry I wasn't there for ya Bev *hugs*

I would have called the landlord as Linz suggested...concerned for the tenants! If they left their dog out for so long...something awful must have happened to them!

I also would have told the landlord that I would be happy to bring The Dog into my home until everything was ok (like Linz suggested).

I will not entertain any other ideas. Too painful (I don't watch the news/listen to the radio....too painful!)

Love you Bev...you loving, caring heart *hugs* Glad the dog is INSIDE (I would've been crying seeing that dog....ooh...makes me want to cry just picturing my Shana in the snow....!!!)

What's the point if they don't intend to care for the animal properly???

My dogs are SOOOOO SPOILED!!!! They NEVER have to endure the cold OR hot weather except to go potty! Even my 175 lbs moose (Rott)!!!!

Very good point! OH, I really can't get started on this again....I can feel my blood pressure rising.....

Hi Nelly,

My little Annie (Golden Retriever) is a rescue dog. We just got her several months ago, she is 2 yrs old and a real sweetheart. Unfortunately, she must have been abused, too, like Kodiak, because she cowers at so many things it just breaks my heart. We had her about a month before she even barked. We love her so much and are trying to make things better for her. She is coming out of her shell and is a truly wonderful dog.

I just don't understand how someone could mistreat and throw away such a great dog.

Hi Michelle,

That's why we got a rescue dog this time around. We can make a difference in a dog that has been mistreated. Believe me, Annie is treated better than a Queen and we love her so much. Hopefully we are making up for some of the awful things she had to go through, and, yes, she is spoiled rotten just like all of our other dogs have been.

I remember when you got Annie. I'm so proud you marched right to the shelter and got her. You're very brave to love again after losing a dear pet. I fear I'd shut down if I opened my heart and then lost Kodiak.

I know Annie brings you a lot of happiness, and it's so great that she can live with a loving family she deserves!! All pets should be so lucky to live charmed lives.

I think I'd make a good pet... I'd LOVE a charmed, pampered life! I'd even promise to learn a trick or two.

Hey Barbie!
That's so awesome that there are other people in the world like you that want to make a difference in an abused/mistreated animals' life. All of my animals are "rejects", my mom calls it. All of them were going to the pound or the street, until I took them in.

I get it from my mom. She has always loved animals and I fell into her tracks......We grew up with about 8 cats, I don't know how many dogs....they have always been a part of our lives. I couldn't live without animals.

If we had the money we would open a rescue. We really want to do something like that. Maybe one day......but not today. Too broke!!

Your dog is a cutie! She looks soooooo sweet. She will open up eventually. I gave my parents a cat that I found outside of a restaurant and it took him 4 years to come around, but he finally did. He's sooo domesticated now. Turned him from wild to lazy!!!! LOL!!

I just saw another puppy on the side of the road about a year ago and I came to a SCREECHING STOP in the middle of the road and tried to get him but he got super scared and took off running. He was soooo tiny.....I felt sooo bad for him. I pulled over and followed him into the woods but he never would come to me. I must have tried to get him for over an hour. At least I got him far away from the road. He would have gotten hit if I wouldn't have stopped. Poor puppy!!!! I wish I could have gotten him.

Hi Tommy,

I agree with you and it seems like the punishment is getting harsher for animal abusers which is a very good thing.

It warms the heart, though, to see the good work our dog rescue groups are doing. We have had first hand experience with Golden Beginnings Golden Retriever Rescue and they are all volunteers and using donations take the homeless & abused Goldens in and nurse them to health and then find them homes. I am considering volunteering myself and have already given a donation.

There's a kitten on our street who's like that puppy, Michelle. We've been leaving out food and water, and a box with a blanket in it, but the little thing won't let anyone get near enough to her to pick her up or pet her or anything. Breaks me and my roommates' hearts every time we leave the apartment, we see her, but can't get close enough to her to help her

Actually in my lifetime I have lost two dogs and each time I found another one to love. After Rusty was put down the house was so empty and there was a big hole in my heart.

After researching the rescue online and seeing pictures of all the beautiful Goldens needing good homes my hubby & I made a bee-line to Adoption Day and decided on Annie. It wasn't hard at all to love her....it just came naturally. I still miss Rusty and think of him often but Annie has really brought us so much joy and helped to fill that emptiness with lots of slobbery kisses.

You're a smart lady! Goldens are so beautiful. I love the breed. Their temperment is just right for me, I think.

My BF is just right for our husky. It's funny to see them play because they think of the same thing at the right time. *shaking head* I wouldn't be surprised if we cut BF open and found a bunch of huskies in him, pulling levers.
