This probably isn't too exciting to you guys, but I am so happy the painting is done! Can you tell I don't procrastinate?? Haha.
I didn't do this all yesterday....I had half the room done - my dad and Justin built the shelf around the room about 1.5 months ago, and I painted it white and the bottom half of the room white. Since then we were just waiting to find out boy/girl!
I did the blue yesterday, and the glaze stripes (WHAT A PAIN). And then I painted the 'Sweet Dreams' above the crib. I love that.
We get the rest of the furniture on the 26th! I can't wait!

I LOVE painting, but those stipes are awful, just measuring over and over and getting them level, etc. UGH. And talk about wasting tape!!
I did a leather look in our dining room - it's my favorite room...and it was so much easier than stripes even though it doesn't look like it!

BTW - I love your new pic - you look gorgeous!!
That shelf - my dad built one for me when I was a little girl, in my room...and I LOVED it because I could put all my little collections on it and pictures and stuff. It only sticks out from the wall about 3 inches, and it's all sanded in a neat design around the edges (can't really tell from the picture).
Anyways, I love it! Thanks for the compliment!

The stripes are so cool---and what beautiful colors!
Did you use the same color, just in different sheens? Or is it 2 different colors? My neice is wanting to do this in her room, and she doesn't know how.

It's just a base color of blue...and then a clear glaze for the stripes. They show up a lot better on the picture than in the room because of the flash. I like them because they are subtle. I did this in my half bath too on a deep brown, and it looks great!
If you do 2 different colors, there's a technique so that you don't get any color seeping through the tape - that would look awful with stripes! The glaze is a little easier because it doesn't seep as much, and if it does you have 45 minutes to wipe it off - so I pull the tape pretty quickly after I'm done.

Yes there is something about little boys! I'm so excited.
It's fine to paint...you really don't need the mask as long as the room is well-ventilated. I didn't have to do any stripping or anything, that's the dangerous part because of the lead release.

I wouldn't use 2 different sheens if you do different colors. Stick with semi-gloss for both or something. I always use semi-gloss because it's so much easier to clean with the dogs, and now the baby.

Ohmigosh! I am so jealous! I wanted the shelving around the room too for Ben's room, but DH said it wouldn't look to good - last time I listen to him by the way.
You did a great job!! Your baby is gonna love it!

Hehe Thanks Linz!
No those pictures aren't fixed...they are actually going to hang on the wall, I just wanted to wait the 24 hours for the paint to really dry, or it'll make the shadows on the wall behind the pics!!
They are those popular poems - "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep..." etc, and "Now I wake in morning's light" etc.. so cute!

If you have someone that's good with wood-working, the shelf only took a day. Just don't make it stick out too far from the wall - and make it high enough that dressers will fit under it!
I love it because it's extra storage in a way too. And I'm one of those people who has picture frames all over, so it's great for that!

I have a friend who used the same color paint---just one in flat and the other part in semi-gloss (in the stripes). And you would swear it's too different colors. IT is very subtle but gorgeous.
I would love to try the stripes, but I know I'd go crazy trying to get them straight. But, you, you're an engineer, so I'm sure it was no problem for you!

How adorable. I never would have gotten the glaze strips that straight. I guess that's why you're the engineer and I spend all day pondering justice! I LOVE the "sweet dreams." I'm going to keep that in mind for 50 years from now when I have kids. I think it would be nice too to put something like "Now I lay me down to sleep ..." But I'm also a religious fanatic, so maybe that's not everyone's bag!
You're baby has a nice place to come home to. So exciting!

The problem with being an engineer is that I wanted everything PERFECT and exactly straight! I'm sure I'd be the only one to notice if something was crooked, but I'm just so anal like that. Took me 2.5 hours to tape for those stripes.

cara your room is so so cute!!!
I love the stripes.. my mom has them done in my parents house too and they look awesome! I want to do them in my own room, but I'll probably wait until I move into a real house. My mom also made diamonds on the wall with glaze and that looks AMAZING. just huge diamond shape outlines instead of stripes with the bottom reaching the top of the next one. So elegant.
as for your quotes... my mom also writes those on the wall! we have eat drink and be merry in the dining room.. and live to the point of tears above the door to outside. she's really into the calligraphy on the walls and it does look precious.
anyways congrats. the place is awesome! now do you have another spare room for kid #2?
oh yeah and show us the dining room.. it sounds fabulous.

Here's the dining room - looks really cool in person! This is my fav room.
That was right when I was finished...now we put a huge mirror on that far wall - it's shaped like an upside down U...really pretty...and some sconces on the sides of the china cabinet. I got a table runner that's really pretty, and little lamp shades for all the lights in the chandelier....I guess I should take another picture sometime!
I've seen a room where people did diamonds with the glaze! I forgot about taht! It looks really cool. I'll try that sometime.
We have one more room - the guest room right now. So when we have another kid, there won't be a guest room anymore - oh well! Unless we somehow find money to finish the basment, which doesnt seem possible for like another 234892 years.

You should seriously consider interior design for people on the side to make extra money - OR you can do this in the evenings to make extra money if you want to stay home with your baby!!

Oh I don't know - I mean all you would have to do is their input - as to what they would like, the colors, give them ideas on what to do for decorating with their new look etc.
You could charge a per hour basis and give them some names of some good companies to buy stuff off of. Pretty much you do the leg work and they do the purchasing. Then you would paint and do suggestions that way.
You could to an internet search and see what other interior designers get for that sort of thing per hour. I would assume it could be worth your while if you are good at it.
Let me know if you want any help hashing out an idea...I, in no way, mean to sound conceided, but I am quite the little entrepenuer - my dad always teases me that I know so many people and have too many ideas to tie myself down to one thing LOL

Hey! We couldn't get pregnant for well over a year...I was one of those 'want to get pregnant' girls! We had a really hard time, so this is a huge blessing! I never miscarried, just couldn't get pregnant.
That blanket over the chair is my baby blanket! My mom gave it back to me a couple weeks ago when she came to visit.
I hope you are pregnant SOON!

I know that I'm certainly hoping that by the time we're havign kids I've started as a garden designer so that even if I get really sick and can't do a regular job I can design part time. I LOVE designing. Doing it for other people is the best as you get to try out ideas that you might not do at home! My garden plan for home is a disaster as I keep on trying to fit ALL my favourite plants in. I did one for my parents garden (based on what they said they wanted/liked) and it was soooo much easier, cos I just went "okay, this is what's wanted, this is the space, what can I do wih that?".
I think being a good designer is about having an eye for colour and spaces and then listening to people. Like, I LOVE your nursery, but your dining room isn't "me". HOWEVER, I can see that it's really stylish and the space and colours works really well . That's the kind of room I might design for someone else...in this house it would never stay looking nice so I wouldn't go for such a "perfect" design in the first place. Also, my parents got a pro garden designer to do most of their garden (not the bed I've designed) 3 years ago and while they love most of it, he totally didn't listen to what they said - blew the budget on 1/3 of it, etc. Listening to the clients is what makes people recommend designers to their friends!
And hey, if you did do that, you could use your engineer maths, technical know-how and perfectionism in something you really like that works around little Grant.

Thanks Cara. My hubby is handy too and he did all the picture box framing and crown moulding himself. (Had to buy him a $300 tool to do it )!!! But at least now I can get him to crown mould the whole house
I'm so very bad with paints. Now that that color is up I want it a shade darker in green. He's ready to kill me! I'm sure it will stay that color for some years though The dining room chandelier is GOING! I just having found the right one but it's too funny that you say to get one with the lamp shades cuz I was leaning toward one like that LOL!
