I have been on the diet for about over 3 months. I started out the first month with no alcohol at all. After a month I tried it. I didn't notice a big difference. However I only drink Michelob Ultra beer. All of the other fruity sugary drinks are dangerous. No shots none the less. You kinda have to experiment.

have I totally banished it from my diet? no. Do I suffer the next day? Heck yeah. today, pain's a 10, and I know my C is going to the D side today. But once in a while I just need to let loose. And I only have 1 or 2 drinks now.

I stopped drinking completely a couple years ago, then convinced myself I could have a little bit every once in a while. Boy, was I wrong. I'd be okay the next day, but it would irritate the stomach lining just enough that within 2-3 days I'd have a major attack.
I still miss it, but it's not worth it. Try to do things with friends that don't involve drinking, like going to movies or to the mall. I'm now not even comfortable around people who are drinking. They act so silly and all I can think about is, did I used to act like that?!
Good luck, hon.

Well Ive been doing some researching ..since Im a desperate teen with this condition, and I have a party to attend to next week. I have some experimenting to do, apparently. I need to try iced tea mixed with vodka, a cape cod, and straight vodka/whiskey with water. (not on an empty stomach, of course.) I'll munch on honeycombs or something. I have the IBS with constipation. ..Do you think I'll get away with an occasional night of drinking, with my list of drinks?

Look, everybody's body reacts to things differently and tolerates things differently. Nobody can tell you what you will be able to get away with as far as drinking, and it will probably change from evening to evening anyway. Most of us gave up alcohol and other things we loved after learning the hard way that it just wasn't worth it. It seems like it is worth whatever might happen for you. There aren't any hard and fast rules with IBS and we are not here to enforce them if there were.
Good luck.

I only drink when I really really want to and when I can afford to suffer the next day. If I party a lot I die for about three days with cramps and general yucky feeling. D a bit on the day after but subsides after that but my tummy only wants rice and plain food.
Check out my Rules of Cheating for my opinions on this.
Personally beer reacts very badly with me, my easiest to consume drinks are white wine or vodka.
Good luck!

Thank you. Your all encouraging. I just wish I had more experience in all of this. So I would know more about myself -things I can tolerate and not tolerate. And I need to try all the recipes. By the way, Cailen. I dont think your link is working. Not for me, anyway.

I drank as a younger teen too. It never bothered me. I got IBS at age 21. Also went through some major issues with an alcoholic father so I think that helped me to decide to not drink anymore too.
I managed to get to age 37 and just stand my ground at parties or dinnner or wherever and just not drink. It's not all that bad. As you mature you will understand better. It's just not worth it to us to have major attacks after drinking. I also had to give up ice-cream only about 3 or 4 years ago. That was major for me but I'll tell ya, I don't even have a tiny taste of it for fear of the reprocussions!
Try drinking something that looks like grown up drink if you are worried about peer pressure. You will find that as you get older, no one cares if you are the only one not drinking. Don't rush getting older though. Enjoy your younger years

Hi Gerry!
I'm doing pretty well! I've been crazy busy because I was running a huge festival of new theatre, dance, architecture, art, etc at school. We did 70 performances of 32 pieces in 8 days! Now I'm trying to catch up on the papers I have due at the end of the semester that I put off! But, in a couple of weeks it will be summer vacation! Yay! I really really can't wait.
And I can't imagine being a diabetic on top of the IBS. You do so well to manage all of it! I think we all cheat every once in awhile- I know I do.
How are you?

Well, I had my last "lot's" of drinks for my 21st. Now even a sip of alcohol gets the old belly gurgling and complaining and major d follows about 1/2 an hour later if I try to have more, just not worth it for me I guess. It's not easy when you're young, but still possible. Good luck!

Hee heee. Uh, noooo. I had my bday celebration over the weekend and I couldn't have been more off the diet if I'd LIT THE SHOTS ON FIRE BEFORE GULPING THEM DOWN.
Well, at least that's what my belly felt like the next morning.
I had a good night tho. I think after my trip to England, I'm going to relinquish my amateur drinker status and just turn pro. Gotta get sponsorship tho... those shooters can be expensive!
Long story short, it all goes to quality of life. And I want my life to be punctuated by rich moments, and not to live in a completely safe bubble. The big picture mandates that I keep myself well overall, that I destress and mind my diet seriously, so that I can walk through life a well person and not someone in constant pain. And then I pick my moments to shatter my health with a slice of lasagne and a world of hurt later!!
Good to remind myself every now and again (but not constantly!) that if I pay the piper I can splurge! Cos if I didn't, I'd be more tempted to cheat a little every day, but then I'd be a sickie constantly!

I was in complete denial about 3 months ago about going back on the diet...I was on the diet for about year and then when I got pregnant I was in "remission" and stopped the diet. It was so tough to get back on it.
I had trouble giving up milk and dairy the most. But finally when I couldn't even go to the grocery store without having an attack I gave in. I have been on the diet for about 1 1/2 months now and I feel so much better.
I get it's a matter of weighing it out for yourself. If you eat safely all day and choose to have a few drinks at night, there's no saying it might affect you. I know for me alcohol was a major trigger. I can't even go anywhere without having an attack after ONE drink so I swear off it. If you can drink though try it.
I wish you good luck. With no alcohol and the diet. PS - Smoking is a trigger too and I haven't given that up so don't think I'm some kinda goody goody or anything LOL

I'm having a bad day cause of a small bowel x-ray I got this morning, so I said "excellent!" and had a rum and coke this evening, cause I don't think I'm going to make things worse than they already are!
I don't usually drink when I'm stable though. And the THOUGHT of beer make my tummy grumble,so unfortunately I probalby won't be drinking that again for a long while!

I have rules for alcohol, but it doesn't involve an outright ban. I did give up beer - the bloating from it is just awful and I was happy to find the source of that and eliminate it from here forward. I also have trouble with sour mix. But most weekends, I do still end up having a drink or two, after a meal. I drink a glass or wine here and there, Bailey's (dairy - really bad - but I LOVE the stuff), and vodka martinis of various sorts are yummy too. I tend to sip at my drinks - like nursing allong one drink while my freinds go through three or four in the same period. So as you can see, everyone has different rules - you just have to see where the lines fall for you. Just make sure that you decide based on how YOU feel and not the peer pressure thing! Good luck! Nelly - I can't believe you had shots on your birtday!!! After talking to you a few days before you really sounded out of it - so I'm glad you could still have fun. I say this partially out of admiration and partially out of sheer confoundedness though! I felt bad for you when you said it was gonna be your birthday and you were still feeling so lousy - but I'm glad you could make the best of it! So it wasn't safe and all - as you seemed to express - "safe, schmafe!" birthdays are quality of life occasions and a girl has to have her priorities! I think sometime soon here we should find another such occasion (even if we have to make one up) and go have a drink or two somewhere in town! Glad to see you back on the boards and putting smiles on our faces again! Hope your face is smiling big as well. Min

Smoking's a trigger?? AHH. So many things are a trigger. I haven't started the diet yet, Im planning to in June or July, but I just wanted to get stable for this weekend, so I can have a decent time without worrying about my horrible bloating. I hope it works. I really do. Although I have no experience. But you guys make it easier. I might try a Cape cod, or straight vodka with water, because it is a grad party. And I do agree with Nelly's statement about special occasions. But I just hope it won't end in disaster. I made plans to eat safe foods starting tomorrow, hoping that I will be fine for the party. Well, I know everyone has their thing, but I can drink large quantities and often and rarely get sick from it. But, give me one bite of ice cream and you won't see me for a month. But, it took a long time of getting myself stable to be able to indulge as I do. Being twenty one I party every weekend, and am usually ok, but I know that I am the rare IBSer in this way. BUT, I stay away from beer, that is instant sickness. Oh, how do I miss beer.. I also can feel ill from rum it seems, but sometimes I take the chance. usually if istick to about two shots I am ok on them. Soco and lime is usually what my friends get. I got sick from a magerita not too long ago, but it was on an empty stomach and I had alot of edamame without enough Soluble fiber the night before. Cape cod? isn't that vodka and cranberry? That is what I get anytime I go out to the bar. Safest drink for me. At home, I either put vodka in RX stress Arizona ice tea (caffeine free), or drink white wine (chardonnay or pinot grigio). I always make sure I eat before I drink, and something that does not have much insoluble fiber or veggies. Sometimes I will make it a soft pretzel for dinner if I am extra cautious. Anytime I get sick from alcohol though, it is D, and I know you said you are a C, so I do not know if those were good suggestions for you. Just remember, no alcohol is safe, and weigh the risk factor before you drink. Also make sure to drink responsibly!

I did go out and must say, I did have shots (shooters, actually, so they WERE mixed!) for my bday celebration last weekend. Dude, after the month I had, I viewed it with mostly a "go ahead, do your worst to me, I've been through it ALL" mentality!
I literally went out with a giant bag full of all kinds of Imodium INCLUDING a giant bottle of the liquid AD kind. And I made it through alive!
Funny story, just came back from lunch with BF at the same place, and the waitress (whom I didn't recognize) saw me and said, "Oh, you're the BIRTHDAY girl!" My BF just LOOKED at me across the table and shook his head. He said, "Hm, you must have made quite an impression...!" Tee heee.
Yeah, Min, I think the bottom line on this one is I wanted to remember April as my bday month, not as The Time I Spent in the Hospital and Sick in Bed for 3 1/2 Weeks Month. Nice to be able to put my stamp on history and not have my stomach write it all by itself!
~nelly~ Still the birthday girl!!!

Hi Alli,
I have mixed feelings on this subject.
My IBS is in remission (thank GOD!), and I don't drink anymore. Before my IBS I used to enjoy a Jack or two (sometimes even three). When I came down with IBS, it was hard to give up my beloved drink, but I was desperate to rid myself of my horrendous IBS attacks, so I did anything and everything, sticking strictly to the diet. After awhile on the diet, I slowly added into my diet one Jack -- just ONE -- preceded by a soluble fiber and a soluble fiber with the drink. I found that the booze calmed down my tummy muscles, actually being very soothing. However, two Jacks were a definite no-no; the second one caused big problems.
Then, as my IBS began to diminish, and my attacks became fewer and fewer, I discovered I didn't like the Jack after all. (All the old-timers in here who know me well won't believe this, but it's true.) I didn't like the feeling of being high, opting instead for total control.
Now, whenever we go to a restaurant, I order something much milder -- a screw driver, vodka collins, something that hardly hits me at all -- and I like the tiny little buzz I get instead of the HIGH from the strong Jack.
Here's my suggestion: if you're gonna drink, limit it to one drink, no more, and just sip it. Order a glass of water to drink with it, and be sure to have that bread or roll or crackers beforehand, and maybe even some afterwards. An Equalactin would also help!
Good luck, Bev

I miss COFFEE the most--more than booze (too many disasters). I miss DIET COKE almost just as much as coffee (although, I sometimes drink it flat, and decaf at that). I MISS CHEWING GUM almost as I miss coffee and diet coke. I miss being able to eat crudite--raw broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery, radishes and dip. I miss almond butter. Do I miss booze--nah!

You could probably still eat almond butter, as long as it is a thinly spread amount on some white bread. Unless you have noticed it especially problematic for you. Once you are stabilized (if you are not), you should goive it a shot! Good way to get some healthy fats and protein in.

Thank you for your response. The party is in a cabin with friends. So I am planning to take a box of honeycombs with me and munch on if I decide to drink. I won't touch any beer. Beer is horrible. But I actually like the feeling of getting drunk and relaxed. I was thinking about trying straight vodka with water or a Cape Cod. ..Maybe enough to get drunk? Without an attack. I hope. I mean come on ..It's the grad.

Maybe I'll give it a trial on some bread, next week--try 1 tsp. on some WHITE (rice) bread (at least the kind I use is natural, organic, sugar and salt free, and raw--no sugars/additives) --MARANANTHA raw almond butter is the brand. Add some alfalfa sprouts, maybe 1/3 or so banana...At the moment I am adding 0 fats to my diet (does this affect mood? hormones? skin texture?) and this keeps me stable.

Excellent points, I will keep everything in mind. I will try and get drunk, but if I feel anything starting, I will stop and maybe have a smoke instead. I know cigarettes are a trigger. But I dont smoke ..cigarettes. I will try and stable myself (for the first time since diagnosed) and have a decent time. I always!!! drink responsibly, thanks for your concern. -Alli

hey Wind,
I am not sure of the exact scientific reasons, but I do know from reading things that you NEED fat in your diet. Not alot of fat, of course, but some. Heather even specifies that although the EFI diet is LOW fat, it is not a fat FREE diet. You could probably research this alittle further if you need to. I would think you would be ok with a little fat in your diet. Are you ok with advocados? They are on the safe list but have fat. Some soymilk maybe? There are light kinds that have small amounts of fat (my fav is Vitasoy light vanilla). SOunds like you like to eat lots of natural and whole foods, so maybe the advocado or adding small amounts of olive oil to your food is a good idea. If you nEED to be fat free to stabilize, I would try not to do it for too long, doesn't sound healthy! But again, I do not know the scientific reasons as to why.

They just really trigger me, if added. Most whole foods are not 100 percent fat free--thankfully. I did the math, and without adding fat I take in roughly 10-14g on an average day. (i.e. there's a little fat in everything, be it strawberries or papaya or banana or kiwi...zucchini or sprouts or spinach or cucumber, mushrooms or artichoke, etc.). I can handle 1/4 small avo., max. There are a lot of fat soluable nutrients--vitamin A, D, K, to name a few. My gastrocolic reflex in response to fats is really quick--40 min. transit time. My skin is disgusting--parched. I'm taking in too much protein, after having done the math. I'm a victim of over-nutrition. I might try a little nut milk, though--Hazelnut or almond. They have about a gram/serving. You're right, though...I've got to squeeze in a little somehow. Lack of fats can make you bummed.
