A moveable feast!

Well, I'm off this week for thxgvg, and to help my mom with her radiation therpay. She's also decided that I'll have to deliver the dinner.

Now, keeping in mind that I don't cook (hate the smell of raw food) I've been researching some food stores and restaurants which will sell a full turkey meal. My IBS will take a back seat this year, as I have ample time to get sick and recover, and I'm at the mercy of our guests' expectations. No way my bossy SIL will choke down the dry, bland fare I'd gladly welcome on my plate! (Tho it'd be great to torture her. Heh, heh.)

So in ascending order of price, Shoppers Food Warehouse, Giant, and Boston Market all sell full meals. BM (lol!) might give me the most trouble, but it's the fanciest. I'm going to tool around town to see if I can spot any more deals.

Anyone have any ideas on meals (for 4 + 1 IBS-er) I can cram in my trunk and motor over to the thxgvg table, ready-to-eat?

Am I being too ambitious?? I kinda feel dumped on, but as I don't have anything else to do on my time off...

Oh Nelly, I feel sorry for you - I particularly hate organising anything - am pretty lazy about such things - so have no advice for you. Only to ask you - what do you mean you hate the smell of raw food? is everything you eat cooked?

Hey daliatree! Thanks for responding!!

Yep, everything I eat is cooked. I can't do any fruit or veggies (unless they're green vegs and cooked within an inch of their life). I gag at the smell of raw meat, and fish and eggs. Always have. I can't even bake a cake unless I rinse out the egg shells and move them out of the house into the garbage outside, pronto. I also can't take out the garbage for the same reason. I always gag.

For some reason, when cooked or raw food sits out for 20-30 minutes, it smells really vile to me. I don't normally eat out, but at a thxgvg dinner I have to breathe through my mouth to avoid smelling the food in front of me. It just smells like decay to me. The smell of raw celery makes me gag. Carrots and corn too. But breathing through my mouth (and a little wine to take my mind off of it) helps.

I'm ok at organizing, tho. I do it for a living, so I'm ok there. This is not a real problem. This is a throw some money at it and it'll go away problem.

Just a liiiittle ironic that the girl who doesn't eat normal food is organizing the normal meal. I dig irony.

check local restaurants and hotels.. we have both that offer specials, both eat in and carry out... Webers is a local hotel witha restaurant in house and they turn the hotel ballroom as well as the restaurant into turkey day to order family tables as well as offer pick up orders of turkey and fixings... yummy according to peopel I know who do it but doesn't meet my dietary needs...

Thanks for the sug, khyricat!

There aren't a whole lot of hotels in my area, but you're right, I have heard of certain hotel restaurants offering take-out meals. I'll check around. I just wish I knew my neighborhood better. I spend all of my time in DC, and none of it in MD that I've lost touch with what's available here!

If all else fails, I'm hitting the soup kitchen. They have the best meals, anyway.

Funny story: I volunteered at a soup kitchen for 5 or 6 hours before dinner at a new boyfriend's house. But a wino hocked his dinner on me just as I was out the door. They had some donations in back, so I grabbed some canvas overalls like 6 sizes too big out of the donation pile and headed out. I showered and changed at home, and made it over to the parents' house just in time for pumpkin pie. But I was covered in fleas and didn't know it. Evidently they sanitize collections before handing them out, and I'd missed that little step. (!!!)

Parents' house, my car, and my house had to be de-flead, but I never gave up the reason why. Late to dinner and bringing 300 little friends with me?? Ha, no WAY I was coming clean about THAT. *shaking head*

Hey Nelly,
Wow...and I am given such a hard time by people because the smell of roasting lamb and the strong cheeses make me want to throw up everywhere. you are very sensitive! you know when women get pregnant their sense of smell becomes so intense...I wonder if you have a baby..what will happen to yours!
You are very brave to deal with the thanksgiving if you react to smells this way....has it always been like this with you....?

No, I appreciate the input! We can't move my mom cos the radiation is making her tired and flushed. So we have to have dinner at her place (she insists!).

Guess she'll have to deal with a dinner that smells faintly like spare tire.

Good thing about me, is that everybody's expections of me are low. I'm the absentminded professor of my family. A little bit spinster. A little bit rock 'n roll.

Yep. <story insues> One 4th of July when I was 8, we had an egg throwing contest. I caught the egg thumbs first, exploding raw egg all over my face, hair and torso on the hottest day of the year. We were about 2 miles from home, and my dad wouldn't let me back in the car. They tried to wash me off with some ice from the cooler, but there was beer in the ice and I ended up with a wet sticky egg beer mixture on my clothes, in my hair, and on my face and ears for the whole walk home in the burning sun. (voilins playing ). I never got over that smell!! What 8 year old would?

But I've had heightened smell for my whole life. On car tirps I can smell if there's running water nearby. I can smell apples and tomatoes being peeled almost anywhere in the house. Unf, it's not something I can turn off, tho.

I've always had good luck eating at Boston Market (my favorite place to eat!). I usually get the turkey (no gravy), steamed veggies (which are not cooked in butter), and sweet potato casserole. I pawn the cornbread off since that's the only thing that really gives me trouble.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Now I have a craving for Boston Market... LOL

Oh man, I'd forgotton about that!! *shaking head* You all know too much!!!!!!!

Yeah, I'm giving her the impression that it's all taken care of, and I refuse to talk about it... I don't want her getting all passive-aggressive on me. Cos she'd totally micromanage me if she knew what I was doing.

I found a place that'll do a whole turkey dinner, plus trimmings, for $34.99. The two first places I went were totally sold out (their whole chain of stores were as well!), so I wasn't expecting much from my local Safeway til they totally bailed me out. They're like, would you like ham with that?? Too cool. Whyever do people cook at these things??

OK, flash forward a couple of days to nell's whole family, food poisoned...!

I called ahead to the local New Orleans bakery to pick up a couple "homemade" peacan pies... Hey, if I have to be sick, I can do it in style, right??

The one thing I didn't skimp on was wine and champagne. 3 red, 3 white, and French champagne, all around. The liquor store guy's looking at me like, uh, you're not going to drink this all tonight honey, right?? *smirk!*

OK, in classic nelly style, this is all going to go most horribly wrong. In a very tragic way!! But for NOW, I'm on top of it!!!

Heather- believe it or not I'm having an ibs SAFE TURKEY DAY! We'll have things that aren't safe, but I am not touching them, and I made all my favorites or will make them in ways I can enjoy.. my favorite stuffing just needed a change in the can of broth, and I found a dairy free breast for Bill to smoke... so we should be all set!

I've just given up on having an IBS-safe holiday. I mean there's so much stress I can't forsee anything coming out well. So I'm just going to grin and bear it, resting where I can, keeping to my meds, and limiting the time I spend eating and spending time with those poison relatives.

Stoopid holidays. Stoopid ex-boyfriends in town calling BF on the phone asking for me to "see how I'm doing." Stoopid SIL trying to eke out information from me. Stoopid germy 3 year old nephew wiping snot on my shoulder. Stoopid brother whining for a cash loan. Stoopid holiday socially hinging on binge eating.

OK I'm done!! Spot the person who doesn't like thxgvg!!

I can understand that- I hate that part of the holidays, but have found that I can handle sitting around the table and enjoying pleasant conversation with people I don't see often... but if I have to deal with my crazy family- forget it.. its why I stay in MI with friends or part of DH's family instead! Same thing with Passover, though every few years I have to give in and go to moms.. I was thinking of inviting the family here this coming year, but only if we'removed and into the new house by then!

Awww nelly! It'll be ok, you should just stock up on immodium, eat lots of bread, or whatever keeps you stable, than start binge drinking. get really drunk to the point that you tell everyone what you really think of them, even telling germy nephew to take his snot somewhere else.

But, seriously, food, especially sugary, large amounts of it and fatty stuff, is a drug, so how can any one look down on you being intoxicated? Certainly will take the edge off!

I am not looking forward to t-day, with this being my first one as a vegetarian. It will be fun to experiment in the kitchen, though, I am making stuffed squash, potatos, stuffing, sweet potato pie, pumpin cake.... (I feel my belly getting bigger and boobs getting smaller by the minute) I can just imagine when I have to eat at BF's house, his mom plopping stuffing right from the turkey on my plate and saying "well, it doens't have meat in it!" and getting insulted if I eat the nothing (typical italian mother) She is very sweet, but things don't seem to stick in her mind, and she is always pushing food on me and gets insulted if I don't eat it (sometimes i have eaten bad stuff just to please her ) SHe is one of those that realizes I can't eat the egg or the milk, but she will bake it into a bread or cake and not understand why I can't eat it!!! ???

Good luck to all of us IBSers! It is such a shame, cause the basic t-day foods are SOOOOO goood for IBS, it is just all of the bad crap that people add to it before it hits the table.

I have the solution to ALL of your Thanksgiving food/stress/family issues

MOVE TO EUROPE, we don't celebrate Thanksgiving.

However, this whole country shuts down for Christmas and that is when WE get stressed!

Watch me and my UK buddies repeat your posts about family and food, not to mention the present buying, the week before Christmas, it'll be like deja vu...another game of scrabble anyone?

Sheri-

So well put thats why I am doing t-day.. I can make all the favorites, someone else can make the not safe green bean casserole everyone asked for and they are buying a pumpkin pie, but everything else at the table will be safe for me on purpose and to prove a point! DH didn't believe it could be done, mom says it can't be done the way I say it can be.. and I figure I'll just prove it.. we're not eating till 5, but I have a feeling my earlier meals and snacks will be taste tests on foods from the day too!

...j/k. I wish I weren't though, I would love to live in Europe, even though I haven't even had a chance t visit yet! My sister studied abroad for a semester in France, but I do not know how she made out cause I haven't had too much of a chance to talk to her about it, our relationship is still shaky.
My grandparents have been to Ireland and LOVE it, you are very live there! But, you can not put too much weight on what i say, becuase I am from the part of the US known as "the armpit of the country", where one of the most toxic dumps ever is located one town over from where I grew up.

Prove them all wrong!
I am sure noone will notice the difference of having soymilk or soy margarine or veggie broth in the potatos vs cow milk, etc. Same goes for other foods. People get in a mind set that things have to stick to tradition, or will not be the same or enjoyable.
I am sure my family will be begging to try my food, but my mom told me that my bro heard I was making food and worriedly said, 'What weird stuff is she going to try and make me eat?"
Gotta love it

Ah, newark! Don't let my BF hear you say it isn't that bad! He went to college there and he said if you stepped one step off of campus that you were likely to be shot! There was a homeless man that lived under the porch of his fraternity house.
But the area I live in is nothing like that, I am more overly developed subarbs, and it isn't too bad i guess.
I am not the New York area, I am closer to Philadelphia, it is only about 15-20 minutes away.
But in the news yesterday they released the most dangerous city in the US, Camden, NJ ! That is like 10 minutes or less from where I live, it used to be #3 on the list.

Yummmmm.... vegetarian restaraunts...
Silly thing is that I am going to school to be an accountant, so if I go much further I will have to stay put, as certifications vary. Kinda like you being the Irish lawyer out here I would be the US accountant in Ireland I do not know too much about it, it probably isn't too different

I feel for you Sheri! My mom is notorious for poisoning my food with something I can't have, and then she'll turn around and deny it. Or I'll ask if there's any milk or butter in the dessert, and only when I get sick afterwards, she's like, "well there was only a LITTLE bit. I thought that'd be ok...!" UGH.

This one time I asked her for quaker oats maple and brown sugar oatmeal, one of the only things I could have. She boilled that 1 hour prep oatmeal jjunk out of a big vat, and doused it with milk and then put (i kid you not) Aunt Jemima's maple pancake syrup in it, stirred it all up like it was nothing and gave it to me. Well, I was so sickened from the first bite I didn't finish it, and lucky that cos I was so sick afterward. When I confronted her (I found the vat of oats in the kitchen, lid off) she DENIED it, saying I was sick and things taste differently when you're sick.

I have faced this with her my WHOLE LIFE. I bring this up now, and she says she has forgotten but doesn't think I'm telling the truth. UGH!

Sorry for the rant... I'd get over this already if #1 she'd acknowledge her lies and #2 it didn't keep happening!!!

I've been to Philly - we got the train to Trenton and then another train to Philly. I also visited a frient who was in college at Westchester University in PA, we even went to a REAL frat party! THAT was VERY exciting for me!

I thought that accounting was the same all around the world...my friend is an accountant and he has worked in Canada, Bahrain, Russia and Ireland. Are you doing CIMA or ACA or ACCA or do any of these qualifications sound familiar to you?

I'm not lonely here, just patriotic! I would move there except I'd miss my family too much. I loved my summer in NY, I became a real yank!!

I went to college in the most dangerous city in Ireland and loved it! They called it Stab City in a US travel guide the year I started there, my Mam wanted me back home!

Hey Cailin,

You may not have Thanksgiving... but when you're an expatriate American living in the UK you end up having Thanksgiving with all the other expatriates anyway! The year I lived there we ended up having Thanksgiving for 30 people! (I think there's no escaping... it might be required of you as part of your citizenship).

She always does things and than says she never did. She never does try to poison me, but she so does not get the diet. I keep trying to keep her away from that nasty, nasty Atkins diet but she won't do it. The funny thing is that she doesn't even realize what a carb is! SHe looked at a pack of swedish fish one day and said, oh , there are carbs in this? And I was like, duh mom, what do you think sugar is? That is the carb you are SUPPOSED to avoid! She thinks she skips the bread and potatoes and is automatically low carb. ARgh.
As much as I have in detail explained the way I eat to her, she always asks stupid questions. "You can eat bread?" "Pumpkin is ok for you?" "What is the name of a cake that is preprepared I can buy for your birthday?"
or says things like, "Well you can't eat anything!"
"Yes, I can mom, I eat more variety and more nutritious than ever before."
and my favorite...
"You need to make sure you don't get a protein deficiency!"
"mom, I will get sick from a protein deficiency LONG after you get sick and die from eating McDonalds and KFC every day."
SHe has never tried to posion me though! Except on easter I saw soymilk in her fridge and assumed that she used it in the mashed potatoes... I was wrong!
Enough mom complaining from me!
I just found out BFs mom was scrambling last minute to make things for me, but he didn't know exactly what I eat to tell her. He should know by now, but he is too lazy to try and understand, but I don't blame him. Poor guy, I am his second long term relationship with an IBSer. Atleast I do something about it, so he is ok with it.

there was a special package deal at the airlines!
But, as expensive as Sinead has said it is there, we would have to sleep on her floor! I am sure that a housewife and a county college sutdent with less than half of an associates degree will be able to afford a house...
I got it! We can be barmaids at the local pub! And pick up all of the cute Irish guys! Ok, ok , we will just flirt with them to hear their sexy accents, and than save up our money to send for our dorks*.
*Chris, my BF, is a selfproclaimed dork, and I know that you say hubby rich is one.

Well, I am still in a two year community school getting an Associates DEgree in Business Adminsitraition, than I would transfer to a *real* university and get a Bachelors specializing in Accounting. It is cheaper to do that way, and good to get up your Grade POint Average since classes are usually easy ( I messed up BIG time in high school , so my college plans were limited).
It is frustrating, because I have only had two basic accounting classes, which I loved, and everything else is history, and physical education, and english, etc (all the basics)
I kinda and leaning toward auditing (i know i know I am weird), but don't know the ins and outs yet. I forget the name of the certification. The thing I was refering to was the Certified Public Accountant certification, to get that I *believe * you have to take the exam in which state you will practice. I heard the CPA is REALLY hard, and most people fail it the first two times. But, I do know that are CPAs by me that work in a couple of states, so maybe that is not the case... I will have to ask somebody. Next time our accountant comes into work I will ask him.

watching my Eagles whoop the Redskins butt! Ah, I love Eagles games! Nothing like watching a game in Philly, especially Eagles. They don't care who you are, they will rag on you. If you come to a game wearing another teams logo, they will point to you and chant "A**hole... A**hole!"
They even booed Boyz 2 Men when they were introduced to sing the national anthem (well, a section of the stands I was in did, but not the stadium as a whole).
It is awesome to turn back when coming out of the Linc to see a sea of green filling into the streets.
Hopefully they go alittle farther this year!

once my bathroom and bedroom are fixed I will have a TINY spare room, but it has a double futon so you guys can share.
You will have no problem getting pub jobs as most people who go for them in the city are here to learn English so you both will have a distinct advantage.
Kenna will have to sleep on the couch though.
What day do you arrive?

easy enough, but the mashed potatoes I make are an adaptation of a recipe on here... sometimes I just make them as is, sometimes I boil garlic cloves with them... only difference.. makes yummy spiced taters.. everything else is straight from the board I think! well other then my bread, but I cna share that without thinking about it... and still haven't gotten there...

Man, aren't moms bizarre?? She's great when I'm sick, but she doesn't understand that she MAKES me sick, hiding ingredients in the food she gives me! Luckily I don't have to eat with her often!!!

That "Well you can't eat anything!" comment is dead on!!! She says that to me ALL THE TIME. DEEP SIGH!

Glad to know there's someone besides me out there.
