I've only got one more week of work before I head back to Ontario for good and I'm quite excited about it. My last day is the 23rd and then the plan was to drive back over the next 3 or 4 days. It's actually slightly quicker and more populated driving from Manitoba to Southern Ontario if I go through ND, Minn, Wis, Ill, Ind and Mich.
However, I just realised that the days I'm planning on driving back are on your Thanksgiving weekend. How busy are the interstates? Does Everybody celebrate Thanksgiving on the Thursday and then go back to work on Friday or is it usually a 4 day holiday weekend and everybody celebrates on different days?
I'm debating if I should wait an extra day so as to not have to travel on the Thursday in the US.

Most people take a 4 day weekend, some people even take the Wednesday before off! We drive up north from Southern Mi and 75 is usually pretty busy. We usually head North Thurday am and drive South to come home on Saturday.

Thanks for the responses. I may end up spending an extra day in Winnipeg seeing friends and then head through the states on Friday and Saturday (maybe Sunday as well if I don't feel like pushing it)
I'll be crossing back into Canada at Port Huron on I-69

I can only speak for NY where there is traffic at 3am on any random Thursday night. but... Usually the Sunday after Thanksgiving is a busy travel day. Friday after Turkey Day can be a busy traffic day because people decide to start their Christmas Shopping.
Its not a four day weekend for me thought. I have to work Friday because the markets are open a half a day. Good thing is, I get to go home at 1 that day and its usually quiet @ work.

sounds like a good trip to me.. Thurs earlier is busy then later typically.. since many people try to arrive before an early dinner.. also early AM is normally ok since many people sleep in... so if I have to do a long trip then we try to divide it... good luck

My guess is most people will not be driving on Friday and Saturday, but Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday will probably be pretty busy. Most people will probably leave to go where they're going after work on Wednesday, otherwise Thursday am. On Sunday I would try to avoid the interstate around 4,5,6 and 7... for Minnesota anyway.

Might be a good amount of traffic in Wisconsin since its also the deer(gun hunting)season the whole week of Thanksgiving. It's opening day Sat.(nov.20th) and ends on Saturday night(nov.27th)with probably heavy traffic on Sunday.

Just try and make sure you do the 90/94 stretch (south of Chicago around the lake into Indiana) in the evening if possible and definitely not on the coming/going days. I got into some -serious- traffic there on several occasions.

Thanks Vincent,
Ya I learned that one the hard way when I was driving through last year. I tried to leave just a a Bear's came was getting out. I had just had a horrible attack the hour before and was already feeling crappy. I then dropped off my friend downtown and headed south along the Lakeshore. I managed to stall my car in the middle of an intersection with a cop yelling at me and literally thousands of people crossing the street. Not my finest hour.
The traffic was pretty busy for the first little bit as well.
