one other option- if the new house isnt' vacant yet, will they work with you so you can keep your cats there (maybe in one room- you come in and care for them?) thats actually what we did with the contractor when he went over building our house... if he needed them to be moved so he could work on a different room he'd let me know and I'd come move them... but they spent every day in either what is now my office or the main bathroom.. they loved the bathroom because as well as their stuff they had the linen closet shelves to climb on and the vanity, toilet, etc... here they had a little carpet covered thing I bought for them, their beds, litter box in the closet and food and water on the opposite side of the room... I stopped by 2-3 times a day to check on them and pet them too...

There have been some really good suggestions from everyone. I'm just going to add maybe there is a shelter or organization in Maine that will foster your cats for a couple of weeks if you explain the emergency situation? Here is a link to petfinder.org I selected cat for type of animal and typed in the state Maine and a bunch of organizations came up. I would maybe start with those? I know cats are tough because there are so many without homes, however maybe some of these organizations can point you to someone/someplace that could help you? Also, maybe someone in your vet's office could help? A lot of vet techs and other people who work in vet's offices are there because they love animals, so someone may be willing to help you out - esp. since it's just temporary.
I have been in a similar situation (not exactly the same - no lease was involved) and I have three cats. It actually happened shortly after I rescued our third cat (all three of them are former strays, actually). And one of the cats will only deal with me or my boyfriend - I think she may have been born to a feral mom.
Anyway - I feel your stress and with having health problems this is the last thing you need. You didn't say what the situation was with your lease being terminated, but I would definitely look into whether or not it's legal to make you be out in one week. I thought it was pretty standard to have to give tenants 30 days, but I don't know what the laws are in Maine. Since you're living on one income, maybe you could call Legal Aid? (That's what it's called here in Delaware - not sure if it's the same everywhere?) Here's a link I found on yahoo when I typed in "legal aid in Maine" legal aid/assistance I don't know if any of these organizations are near you, reputable, or if you would even qualify (it can't hurt to call and ask if you do).
I'm really sorry all of this upheaval and chaos is happening to you. I will continue to think about what you might be able to do, esp. with regard to the kitties.
Keep your chin up. Things usually have a way of working out.

This might be the dumbest idea ever, but I'm trying to think outside the box ...
Could you rent an RV for 3 weeks? I know people rent them to drive across the country. Could you rent one and NOT drive across the country? That way you could keep the kitties with you, stay together, etc. Just a crazy idea. Good luck. So sorry you have to go through this.

First of all, thanks for all the suggestions! You guys rock. Truly. I was so upset about this yesterday that I couldn't even see straight, much less think about it in practical terms... I bookmarked this thread in case I need to fall back on any of these ideas in the next few weeks. I really appreciate it!
Having never been through anything like this before, I had no idea how things worked. My therapist today explained that even with due legal reason to evict us (which, unfortunately, they have), it's not like we're going to get thrown out ON SEPTEMBER 1. That just means that if we don't leave by then, they'll start eviction proceedings against us... which can take up to 3 months... at which point, god help us, we'll most likely be in our new house.
My therapist also suggested that we call our realtor and ask her to talk to the seller, and see if the seller would be willing to "rent" the house to us for the next couple months, until the closing is over with. She said that, as a seller herself several years ago, she'd have been THRILLED if the buyers offered such a thing, because her house was sitting there vacant, and she was still paying the mortgage on it.... and that's EXACTLY the situation with our house. The place is empty; the seller took the last of her things out 2 months ago.
So I'm still kind of anxious, but nothing like yesterday. My biggest fears were having to confront this total b*tch woman our landlords have as their "property manager" on 9/1, and then ending up homeless, and it really doesn't appear that either situation is going to happen, so I can relax a little.
Thanks again, guys. Now I just have to unwind from the 6-hour panic attack that kept me from sleeping last night.

Casey,
Thank goodness for therapists! I'm so glad she was able to give you some sound advice.
I just wanted to chime in that we did that rental thing your therapist suggested, but we (the new buyers) were renting back to the sellers. It worked out fine in our case, too.
I'm very happy that you won't be homeless!

How did I miss your original post? I missed this entire thread. Oy.
I like the idea of renting the new house until the closing. That kind of assures the sellers that you WILL be closing with no problems. As you know, I'm in the process of selling the condo, which is vacant, and frankly I wouldn't mind the buyers moving in early at all; better that they move in and occupy it than have it be empty.
Besides, it sounds like you're in a bad situation where you're living now. I'd want to get out of there as soon as I could.....
Good luck -- and keep us posted!
Bev
