Please tell me if it's possible my 6yr. old could have IBS? My husband & I dissagree. I KNOW it's a physical problem. He thinks it's just laziness. I actually put my son to bed 2yrs. ago without his underwear on just to see if it was happening before/after or during his sleep (the "runs", I mean) Anyway, he was totally asleep and I sneaked in to check on him. Sure enough, it was running out. I carefully (so as not to wake him) wiped his rear, and then waited 15min. I checked again..the same thing! To me that proved it was something he caouldn't control. If it was a LAZY problem...he can't control it during his sleep. Please...need feed back so I know I'm not the only one who belives it's not his fault! Even his Dr., when I asked her, asked me if he has any "emotional problems", etc.

Hi Christine, I'm sure one of the first questions your doctor
asked was, does he suffer from incontinence during the day?
If yes, then it's quite possible he does have IBS or other
colo-rectal and or pelvic floor problems. If he's not having
any incontinence during the day, then it well could be some
kind of strange psychological problem. -Bob

Johnny, YES! He actually barely makes it home from school before it has gone completely through his clothes. We have resorted recently to putting pull-ups back on him because of the problem. I personally think that it would be better to put extra layers of underwear on him, but sometimes that hasn't worked. His bottom used to get SO sore--poor guy! It's not that bad now (I give him 2fiber pills in the morning and 2 at night. I recently started to send him one for lunch time too) But it is still not anywhere close to normal. Recently it seems to slowly be going back to the way it was, hence, the extra fiber. I'm reading some and trying to see what may work. Any pointers? Thanks! CHRISTINE

Christine, Well, that is conclusive evidence beyond a shadow
of a doubt that it is NOT a psychological problem. However,if
the physical problem is not addressed real soon, it could
result in psychological problems for the poor little guy,
especially at his young age.He certainly doesn't want to be
pooping in his pants with his friends around.
As far as further analysis, has he had any other symptoms
that would indicate IBS? Stomach aches, gas, bloating, etc.?
If not, then he likely has an anatomical problem. In any
case you definitely need to take him to a doctor that will
give him the full battery of tests and soon! At his young
age, whatever's wrong may need fixed right away before it
becomes a real serious problem. I feel so sorry for your
little boy. I wish you and him the best! -Bob

bob, i think we should be careful about giving definitive diagnoses like that - there's no way we can know for sure. i think this kid really needs to see some professional specialists.

Jaime, I think this business about not knowing absolutely for
sure is a bit of a copout. Based on what she's told me, the
poor kid's problem is not pyschological. I can explain why
if you wish. -Bob

i'm sorry bob, and i really don't want to get into a spat about this, but only a professional can make that sort of diagnosis. we're not doctors, but even if we were, it's not the sort of thing that can be known for sure from a few message board posts. he really needs to see some specialists.

Was there ever a time that he did not have this problem, or has he been experiencing this since he began potty training?
