I am looking to put some money into a piece of equipment that I can use at home instead of buying another gym membership. I have done a lot of research on treadmills, stationary bikes, rowing machines, etc. I like the idea of the rowing machine, but Bevvy has convinced me that I have to be REALLY serious about this one to make sure I'm going to use it correctly - and that there's a lot to learn in the technique. I like the idea of a treadmill best - but they are cumbersome, immovable and big. Then I was thinking a stationary bike - I could drag it in front of the TV to use and shove it against a wall when not in use. Plus, they're a little less expensive. But then I read that the cardio workout is not as good on a bike as it is on a treadmill or elliptical or rowing machine. Ho hum. Now I'm just confused. I don't really want to spend more than about $1000.00 Canadian, but I don't want to buy a piece of crap that's going to die in a year. I want a machine with a good warranty. Stephie gave me the idea of finding something AFTER Christmas - which is fine with me - it might be cheaper then. Any suggestions?????

I love my tread mill. It's easy to work, it has an incline you can set. It's a breeze. 30 minutes a day and that's it! Hope this helps.
Love,
Jamie

Stationary bikes, actually, are okay for cardio. There's far less impact on your joints than with running (treadmills). Yuo can get a stationary bike that will have a "hilly" program in it (may pay more for it), that will give you just as much of a lung buster workout.
Bev's right though, with rowing machines (my all time favorite cardio), you do have to be serious and use it correctly... the technique requires a lot of attention at first, but once you get it down, it's cake.
Really, I think it's more about what you enjoy doing. A treadmill may provide a better workout than a bike, but I HATE running (in any form, and walking in place drives me nuts), but I love rowing and biking. I lost a good deal of weight riding a bike 60 minutes a day on the hilly setting(one 40 mniute ride and one 20 minute ride). Course, I was also working out 6 days a week at the time.

Hi there,
I just wanted to let you know... When Adrian and I bought our elliptical, we got it at a department store and there was a large section of exercise equiptment and they were ALL on sale. Ours was 50% off, and a lot of the other pieces were too. If you are going to be looking at bikes, you could get yourself a REALLY good deal I think!
Ours was at Sears, so I'd have a look there if it's convenient. Even after Boxing Day, they had a "Boxing Week" sale with the discounts for the next week.
Let us know what you get!
