I have a offical diagnosis of IBS and IC, have been wroking on improving the lifestyle and dealing with remaining a skinny minnie...:) Tomorrow I must take a small bowel series that requires barium. I have some concerns and don't know how the barium is going to trigger the ibs. Does anyone have any history for me about their persoanl experiences? Thanks!

Well, the *prep* for the barium is really supposed to trigger IBS-D, in that you're supposed to be "flushed out" It's not fun but it's only one night.
Next to the prep, the actual procedure is not bad at all and I didn't have any IBS problems during it.
As for the barium itself, after the LOWER GI procedure was done I found it a bit constipating (I'm IBS-D so it was kind of a relief, not to mention the fact that I had had about enough of D at that point! lol )... and then mostly I was just pooing white for a few days, lol. From what I've heard from others it can be a bit constipating generally, but the effects usually go away as the barium gets flushed out of your system after a day or two. (And then just back your normal IBS-C I guess.) I, personally, didn't notice any effects from the upper GI barium, but I guess it could also be constipating for some too.

I am a IBS-C & went thru the barium test in July 04. I've been thru it before, It's not too bad, it dosen't taste great,Like chalk, but you'll get thru it. Afterwords yeah,I pooed white too, but it wasn't too constipating, I actually went before I left the hospital. If you have a chance, ask your the technichian if it would be OK to use a laxative after it. They might be able to tell you. Hope all goes well.
