I'm brand new to this board and hoping that someone has had a similar experience. I was diagnosed with IBS (via colonoscopy) at the end of this past June. Since that time, I've been sick with a fever, body aches, diarrhea, constipation, dry heaves. I was prescriped an antiobiotic, Ciprofloxaxin, and at the finish, all symptoms (minus fever and body ache) returned with a vengeance. I literally could not eat ANYTHING for an entire week without diarrhea (usually 10 or more hours after eating). More Cipro was prescribed and I was fine the same day. At the finish, back to the same symptoms. I can't see a GI specialist until the end of Sept. because of their schedule. Has anyone experienced this with antiobiotics? Just looking for a life line! Thank you for your time and information. I am grateful for this forum.

Go to your health food store and pick up a probiotic ASAP. You are looking for something called acidophilus or a product like Jarro-Dophilus EPS. At this point all the good bacteria in your gut has probably been killed, and a probiotic will help restore that.

Do a search of past posts, and you will find more info on this topic.

Welcome, and feel better soon!

Ciproflaxin is a very unfriendly antibiotic for ibs....it killed me when I took it but I didn't have as bad symptoms as you...still it was terrible. I have just completed a ten day course of flagyl which was much friendlier, but still not fun. The fever sounds very strange for ibs....have your doctors done blood work for a parasite?
I really hope you feel better

Just want to make sure I'm understanding--
Did you actually feel better when on the Cipro? And then got sick again AFTER you finished them?

I have had this experience, but without the fever. I was put on antibiotics for another problem while I was in the middle of a fairly lengthy and severe IBS attack. My IBS got better. A few days after I went off the antibiotic, my IBS symptoms returned. This has occurred now 3 times over the past several months. It's odd, because antibiotics are often problematic for IBSers. My alternative MD believes that, based on stool testing, I have dysbiosis--I have an overgrowth of candida as well as an overgrowth of an unfriendly bacteria. The bacteria needs to be treated with antibiotics and the candida needs probiotics, so treating this problem gets complicated. I had the best results after taking Cipro for a week while taking heavy doses of probiotics (acidophilus and sacromyces bilardii), then taking a one-dose Diflucan (antifungal) after finishing the antibiotics. This seemed to help get things in balance, and my IBS symptoms have improved. Note that this kind of treatment isn't something most Western doctors would come up with.

Also, it is possible that my intestinal imbalance resulted from a parasitic infection that I had which was successfully treated last year. The parasite and the treatment for it may have caused unfriendly flora to fluorish in the intestines. I would definitely get tested for a possible parasite. They're quite common.

Don't know if this is helpful or not--your symptoms sound unusual. Best of luck in finding the answers so that you can feel better soon!!
