Hi All
I am wondering what to do about calcium? I dont have any dairy and I hate soya/rice milk except if its in something but I dont have it much, am I missing vital calcium and how do I get it? I looked into taking a calcium supplement but wasnt sure what doesage I need???
I'd really appreciate it if someone here knows and can tell me.
Also, I don't understand the soluable fiber supplement? Is it vital to take it and what does it do apart from reducing bloating and gas.
Also, right now my diet isnt very adventerous, we are on a tight budget for food right now so should I be taking a multivitamin??
My diet mainly consists of:
A lot of the soluble fiber foods, white meat or fish with soluable fiber and veges or beans for dinner.
I am planning to expand my diet gradually as funds improve and I am more stable with my IBS.
Is there anything to take for bad periods? I find I get the munchies every single month, Im not hungry but I want to snack, and of course this doesnt help my ibs, I get quite bad pain and end up taking pain killers but you can only take 6 in 24 hrs so for the other few days I am in pain. Low in energy too.
Feel like I need a boost of energy!!
Please if you can give me any advice I'd be so grateful.
Niki

Are you IBS-C or IBS-D?? I ask because depending on that will depend on what vitamins you should take. I am IBS-C and can help you with that. Just let me know what you are first!

By the time I post this, I'm sure someone else will have found the information quicker, but whatever, I'm gonna post anyway! This page explains all about soluble fiber supplements and why you should take one. It looks like a lot of reading, but it's not too bad... I definitely recommend reading it through, Heather explains it better than I can.

As for calcium, 1000mg is the recommended daily intake. If you tend towards constipation, calcium might make you even more so, so you'll want to balance it with magnesium, if you do. (And the amount of magnesium recommended is half the milligrams of whatever amount of calcium you take... so if you take 1000mg calcium, 500mg magnesium would be good.) Heather also explains that here.

My diet isn't very adventurous either, and I just started taking a multi. Iron can be difficult for a lot of people to handle, so that's the only thing I can think of to watch out for. (Oh, and if you do take a multi, check the amounts of calcium and magnesium in them before taking any more separately!)

Finally, you might find some good, SAFE snacks and munchies here.

Hope that helps a little!
