Hi Everybody,
Tonight I'm sitting at the computer totally drained. I'm an IBS-D and if I'm going to have attacks it's always within the 1st 2 hrs of the morning. Well, this am my 1st BM was normal (which it usually is), but then about 15 min. later it hit with a vengence. Very bad cramps and it took 3 immodium and 2 Levsin to stop the attack. I sat in a chair for an hour trying to get my tummy back to normal and felt very tired (the levsin seems to do that; I don't take it very often) I ended up going to work about 10:30, but was totally exhausted. I left for home about 2:00 (the nice thing about having your own business ) I have been on the couch since then, not really sleeping, just totally exhausted and no energy for anything. I've been forcing myself to drink water and eat small amounts and outside of a little nausea, that seems to be ok. My question is this. Last week my hubby had some kind of an intestinal bug where he had diahrrea every time he went and some cramping. (He usually has a stomach of steel) He continued to eat normally and continued to work; just had diahrrea for about 4 days. I'm just wondering if because of my IBS, I may have gotten what he had and it's affecting me 10x worse. I haven't had those bad of cramps in a long time and even tho I get pretty tired after a major attack, I have never felt this terribly tired all day. What do you think? I'm kind of scared I'll have another bad one tomorrow am.By the way, I didn't take any SFS today (I take 5tsp of acacia/day); have just been trying to give my tummy a total rest of SFS and any vitamins

Sorry to hear that you're feeling so lousy
I would assume it's possible that you picked up his bug, and being that people who have IBS have extra sensitive tummies, it's reasonable to assume that it would hit your harder.

Do you know for sure he had a bug? Did he have a fever or anything? Do you?

I don't know too much about this, but I hope someone else will be able to help you more.

Feel better soon,
Kelly

Hi Janene,

It could be the bug that your hubby had, but it could also be something else you had the day before -- or how MUCH you had. I had the worst attack last week, then wracked my brain trying to figure out what I had eaten to cause it. Turns out it wasn't WHAT I had, but how MUCH. I just can't eat big meals.

Anyway, I have a suggestion. Since you're not taking any SFS right now, in the morning, the MINUTE you get up, before your morning tea even, fix yourself a piece of toast. Just one piece. If you can't eat a whole piece, then half. But make yourself eat that little bit of soluble fiber. I think it'll help a lot.

I'm also a D, and I was beginning to have morning cramps, and of course the inevitable Big D. I decided to force down a little bit of toast BEFORE my morning Soyfee, and surprise surprise, it worked. No cramps, no D. Now, that's what I do every morning -- before anything, the MINUTE I get up, before my tummy has a chance to start rumbling, I have my soluble fiber.

Give it a try.

Bev

Actually, I am taking an SFS at the present time--2tbs of acacia split up throughout the day. I just didn't take any yesterday when I was feeling yuk. And as far as eating a piece of toast 1st thing in the morning, you had actually suggested in an earlier post to try keeping my tummy from getting so empty from night to morning. I've been munching on a couple of saltines before bed; a couple during the night and then a couple in the morning about 1/2 hr after taking my librax. It has seemed to help some. I can get fairly nauseated on the mornings, so it's hard for me to eat right away. Usually I don't put anything in my tummy until about mid morning when things settle down abit.
As far as overeating causing an attack, I'm right with you. My stomach can't hold near as much as it used to and I have to be so careful not to eat too much. I am feeling better today and really think it might have been a bug, but with IBS, one never really can tell the difference. I'm usually fine the morning after I've had an attack the morning before, because I'm totally cleaned out. However, tomorrow am will be the test. Thanx for your help. I really appreciate your suggestions

Sorry you had a bad day. Do you think not taking the Acacia was what made you feel better? Don't know but just a guess. I know it has bothered Bev and some others causing D and gas. Does the Librax seem to be helping??
Hope so. About the vitamins...have you read the label very thoroughly...do they have sorbitol/mannitol or too much iron?? Once my vitamins was the culprit of 2 weeks of "D".
Also, be sure you are not chewing gum or mints that might have sorbitol.

I just got some of those knit accupressure wrist bands for nausea. I will try them next time I get nausea. Have you thought about using those??

OK, I'm through rambling

I was only off acacia yesterday when I felt so punk. Otherwise I've been taking 2tbs of acacia/day. I had been up to almost 3tbs a couple of weeks ago, but seemed to have more attacks, so I backed off. Have been at 2tbs for a little over a week. Don't really know if it is helping, but don't think it is hindering either. I went back on 5tbs again today as I was feeling better, so we'll see.
I really don't know if the Librax is helping at all. I was so hoping taking the 2nd one before bed would help with the attacks first thing in the morning. Not sure what brought on the bad attack yesterday; didn't eat anything different the day before, so kind of wondered if I didn't pickup the intestinal bug from hubby. I don't know; sure wish I could get this under control; but then, so do so many others on this website
Re: vitamins--my doc said to stay away from vit B as that can reek havoc with IBS. Have you ever heard that? I was kind of surprised on that one, but have stay away from it, seeing I was taking a mega dose of it. Sometimes I think I should quit all vitamins for awhile and see if I feel any better.
Feeling kind of yuk again tonight; so I'm hoping tomorrow morning won't bring bad stuff.
Thanx for your note.
Janene
