I know that sugar isn't a digestive tract stimulant or irritant, so I guess my question is... what could a "reaction" to sugar mean? Is a reaction to too much sugar kind of a normal thing? Or should I mention this to a doctor when I go on the 2nd, and ask to be tested for something specific?
I ate something very safe for breakfast - hot rice with sugar and vanilla. I overdid it with the sugar, but I was too lazy to remake it, so I ate it anyway. By the time I was done with the bowl, I felt sick - not nauseous, exactly, just really woozy and kind of jittery. It's been about an hour, and now I have D.
So frustrating.

Hey, atomic rose -- I have the excat same reaction! I don't know what it means in terms of IBS, though. I hope somebody here knows! It could be useful, I think, taking it to your doctor. And it's also a good reminder; I'm going to try to remember when I go on Tues for my appointment.
For me, I think it's only an excessive amount of sugar, or some kinds of sugars... like, the corn pops that are supposed to be safe, if I have a few small bowls in a day, I have D for sure. etc.
I'm sorry you had D and felt bad. And, it's good to make those connections!
I'd love to hear back, what you hear from your doc...if you feel like sharing. Hope you feel better soon!

Hi Casey,
You know how they say when kids eat too much sugar they get hyper. Maybe you just have sugar overload.

I didn't necessarily think it immediately meant something bad... I guess I just wanted to make sure that it didn't trigger alarm bells in anyone's head, like I should worry about being diabetic on top of everything else.
I'm assuming the doctor will do a full range of bloodwork anyway, since I haven't had a physical since 1995. I would hope so, anyway. (Have I mentioned yet that I don't trust doctors as far as I can throw 'em?)
Thanks!

I'm glad I'm not the only one, although I'm sorry you get it too. For me, it's not cumulative - I typically eat little bits of sugar at least a couple times a day and have no problems. It's when I eat something REALLY sugary that I notice a problem. This morning, I accidentally put a tablespoon (!) of sugar on something I normally put a teaspoon or so onto. Two hours later, my head is STILL buzzing.
Thanks for replying!

i don't know much about it, Casey, but i'm sure a Google search will pull up a lot. you may want to check into it....
i know if i'm in a flare of either IBS or fibro, sugar really aggrevates both problems. i have no idea why...

when you go to the doc be sure he does a full bloodwork test...which includes liver enzymes, bilirubin, anemia, glucose, etc. That can tell you a lot of things that are going on inside your body. If he doesn't mention it.....you insist on it.
