Antispasmodics are prescription as far as I know. I take librax now which is one and I used to take bentyl which is another. They are for D and they basically are supposed to stop the colon from going into spasms which causes D. I think you can only get them from a doc. I may be wrong though. Hope this helps!

Do you know of any side effects? Is this similar to Immodium?

Most do have some sort of side effect. Bentyl for me gave me dry mouth and makes you sensitive to the sun too. I took Librax one time too and it made me sort of sleepy. Everyone's different though. YOu have to decide if the side effects outweigh the problem. I loved the Bentyl. Took it before I ate and it really did help my IBS.

I am also a D. My doc prescribed an antispasmodic for me years ago -- and when I didn't like it, he prescribed another -- and then another -- until I found one I liked. No, Immodium is not an antispasmodic; it's for diarrhea and does nothing when you're cramped up. In fact, some antispasmodics do nothing (such as NuLev).

Here is a post I sent to Kimm a few months back that might help (and will explain the side effects): web page

Once you're stable, you won't have need for the antispasmodics except on a very rare occasion. My bottle of Donnatal is about to expire, and it's still practically full.

The only over-the-counter antispasmodic is Heather's peppermint caps. Can you tolerate peppermint? If so, you might consider ordering some from her. Check out the link to your left.

...from my experience and from reading posts by others on the board, sometimes you can seem to "get used" some. I was first on Bentyl when my doc thought I had IBS. My instructions were to take it when I hurt. or before meals. Worked for a month or two, than not at all (i took it almost all of the time).
After i was diagnosed with IBS, my GI doc said take one librax half an hour before I ate (I told him that Bentyl no longer worked). Again, worked for alittle while atleast. But, I had not changed my diet at that time.
Antispasmodics are not a cure-all for IBS, as your doctor may tell you they are.
Librax is also a tranquilizer, Heather writes in her book. I am angry that my doctor did not tell me this when he prescribed it to me!
I found if i save them for tough days they do seem to help.
Another plus- prescriptions are SOOO cheap- less than my insurance copay even!
