I am new to this site. Hi. My future daughter-in-law has IBS and is losing alot of weight and has no medical insurance. I was wondering if anyone on this board has the same problem and what can be done for it. She has not been officially told she has IBS but she has all the symptom of it. Is there any advice for her. Thanks.

I don't know a lot about gaining the weight if you have a problem losing it, but here's a link that might help you. You need to scroll down to close to the bottom of the page. Hope it helps you. web page

Thanks a lot. I am worried about her. She was over 180 lbs last year and a half and now is down to 130.

I haven't been diagnosed yet, either, but I'm working on it. I've lost about 30lbs since January because of my symptoms. The diet information on this site will help stabilize her health, and she *might* gain a little of the weight back, but she really should get to a doctor as soon as she can, to rule out anything more serious than IBS.

I sympathize - I don't have insurance either. Two things that might help. Has she ever tried applying for Medicaid, or a state-run version of it? I really though I wouldn't qualify for it, but I applied today and actually got it. Second thought... if she doesn't qualify for state assistance, she can always go to the emergency room. Hospitals CANNOT turn people away, even if they have no way of paying. I used to work in a hospital; I know it's true.

Anyway, I hope she gets feeling better soon! Good luck!

Hello,

That sounds a lot like my situation. I was about 180lbs at Christmas, and am now down around 130-140 (haven't been weighed in awhile but am still losing pant sizes). If she's anything like me, I would assume the culprit is her diet combined with possible D. Is she IBS-D?

I find that all the D has caused me to lose weight, and I've also started eating a lot less because so many foods don't agree with me, and I feel sick so often that I can't eat. Believe me, you start drastically cutting down on what you're eating, the weight starts falling off. How tall is she? I know my doctors weren't particularily concerned because in their opinion I could "Stand to lose some weight" which was really frustrating, but now they're finally starting to take notice.

If it's stemming from a lack of calories, you could try a search on this board for some of the higher calorie foods, especcially the desserts. They're all completely IBS safe and most are low in fat, but a lot are high in calories which should help with the weight loss.

Good luck!
Kelly

Hi, It's important to increase calories to prevent weight loss.
It can be an idea to eat every 2 hours (max 3 hours). That's what I do and it is working. I eat even if I'm not hungry, even if I have pain...

I noticed that I had less symptoms (constipation, bloating, gas, dyspepsia) when I was at a healthier weight!!

I started to eat every 2 hours for almost a month now and I gained 3 pounds. It's not a lot but it's better than nothing!!! I'm now at 98 lbs. I want to reach a minimum of 105 (110 if possible)!!

I lost a lot of weight when I first got ill. It has mainly stabilised now (luckily I was overweight before so it isn't too bad now I have recovered a bit)but is still low.

My problem is that if I get run down, stressed or just pick up a cold bug etc I start losing weight whatever I eat and I find it difficult to get enough energy. I eat almost constantly in small amounts through the day - but it feels like my body isn't processsing it properly.

Has anyone else found this.

I can sympathise with everyone who finds it hard to eat because they feel sick. Strangely enough i find I feel less sick if I can force myself to eat something, but it isn't pleasant, especially first thing in the morning.

Take care everyone and thanks for all your great recipe ideas!

Catherine

Your future daughter-in-law is lucky to have such a concerned future MIL.

She needs to be tested for celiac, etc., THEN she needs to have a colonoscopy to confirm the IBS diagnosis.

If it turns out she has IBS, it doesn't necessarily mean that's the cause of her weight loss. I have the opposite problem; I can't lose weight no matter what I do! I've been on the program about 6 months now (actually longer, but 6 months without cheating).

Health insurance or not, she needs testing. Good luck.

Bev

Is your DIL following Heather's diet? Because if so hopefully she'll be able to get stable soon, and then maintaining or gaining weight shouldn't be as much of a problem. There are plenty of higher-calorie soluble fiber foods that she should be able to eat.
