It's a bittersweet thing to be visiting this website after a few months of feeling so well, however, I find myself here once again, feeling safe in expressing my feelings.
Well I wanted to share with all of you that I'm presently experiencing a "flare-up" once again with IBS-D. I was pretty sick last Fall and spent at least 3 months recovering from that flare up and since had experienced an amazing 2 months of good health....till now!
In checking back over the last several days, I realized that I had introduced red wine on too many occasions in a short period due to an unusually heavy social calendar. Let's see.... 4 glasses of red wine in 4 days! Too many, too soon right? Ever since then, everytime I eat it goes right through me. Today I started my probiotics again. All of those scary feelings are stirring inside me again that I'll never be well, yet there's also a smarter inner voice that knows I can be hopeful for better days. I'm seriously consdering giving up alcohol in all forms now. I mean, what's the use right? I'm feeling a little sad about having to give up yet another food/beverage thing.
Thanks for letting me share my mixed bag of emotions.
-Alicia

Alicia, sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Yeah, that's exactly the thought process I went through that led me to gradually give up my beloved red wine. Just made me too sick once too often. I encourage you to give it a try. If your tummy is like mine, it will thank you for it!

I understand how you feel. It's so upsetting to go back to square one with symptoms. Just remember that this time, you'll feel better sooner than last time and you'll be back on track. You also will know to watch the wine. You've learned a good lesson. BTW- you may not have to give it up completely. I can tolerate the odd SMALL glass of wine with a meal. Definitley not 4 in 4 days though. I find that most social occasions, I just avoid alcohol altogether because I don't want to have an attack in that situation.
Take a deep breath, make yourself some peppermint tea, and feel better. We're here for you!

Hey Alecia... just to let you know, I am allergic to beer and wine. I can have a martini every once in a while without having a huge problem though. Could it possibly be the same for you? But four drinks in four days does sound like a lot for a sufferer anyway.

I'm going to echo HanSolo's point -- it may be better just to cut back rather than completely give up on the red wine. When you're stable again (don't worry - it will happen!), just try one glass one night for instance to see how things work out. You also might want to consider everything else you ate - sometimes with me it can be a combined effect that does me in.
You wouldn't want to have to completely give up the red wine if you don't have to!

Alicia, it's a sad thing. I know. I've just about given up my Jack. (Don't tell LS; I want her to think I'm still a lush.)
I remember once being real strict about my diet. I'd go to social events and order water on the rocks; everyone thought I was drinking "stollie on the rocks," and I let them think it. I felt SOOOO virtuous and I recall telling myself as I was drinking my "stollie": "I'm losing weight and feeling great! I'm losing weight and feeling great!" It worked. I lost a ton.
Alicia, you're right; it's really not worth it. What's the point? If you know you're gonna suffer, how can you really enjoy it? I also feel that, if your body doesn't like something you're putting in it, and it tells you so in no uncertain terms, then it's time to go without it.
