I was just going back and reading some older posts and I came across one from Shawneric on 2/25/04. Maybe you've already read this, but in the details of the Comprehensive Overview of Constipation, they mention that bananas can actually cause constipation. No wonder I've been having problems while following the IBS diet! I've been averaging 1 and sometimes 2 bananas a day!

Green bananas cause C and ripe bananas can cause D. Eat them somewhere in between and you'll be fine. I eat 3 a day usually but never greenish.

"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Agreed. There are so many wonderful sources of soluble fiber in the vegetable, fruit, and grain worlds, and one of the watchwords of good nutrition is variety, variety, variety. Explore!

Check out Shanna's incredible recipe: web page
Like Shanna, hubby and I have this toasted with Soy Garden on it every morning for breakfast. It's FABULOUS! I can tolerate whole wheat, as Shanna can, so I also use whole wheat flour in mine -- but it comes out equally as good with white.
I never eat bananas. When I buy them, I buy them strictly for this recipe and wait for them to get almost black, then I double the recipe and freeze one loaf; that way, I don't run out. Hubby loves this stuff, and when I go to bed, he raids the fridge. In the morning I discover we're all out -- so I turn to my stash in the freezer.
Try it; you'll like it! OH! And just for the heck of it, I threw some "leftover" yellow raisins in the last batch I made, and hubby said he really likes it that way; nice and moist.
Enjoy!
Bev

well yup, if the bananas are causing you to be C, the other ingredients in a bread might help to get things moving, but you'd still get the yummy banana flavour. Obviously I wouldnt go for the bread over a plain banana EVERY time but if you have one in the morning maybe you could substitute with a piece of B bread instead. recipe #1 recipe #2 recipe #3

Actually there aren't many soluble fruits and vegetables, but I already ate 2 bananas a day before the diet and almost a pound of carrots. I also eat sweet potatoes and root vegetables which I love. I eat dried papaya and mango sorbet and lots of mushrooms but I don't like mangoes or avacadoes. The only problem with my diet is if someone were fructose intolerant it would be terrible! I knew a weird old man that lived on bananas and potatoes for years. It reminded me of the movie Papillion with the coconuts. But no one has to eat 3 bananas a day like me! It just happens to be my favorite fruit and carrots are my favorite vegetable-I'm so lucky with this soluble fiber thing!
