Hey Guys,
I've had a terrible sore throat that's persisted for the last three days or so, and today when I looked at my throat it's visibly swollen, so I think I'm going to have to pop into the doctor's today and see if I've got some sort of infection. I didn't want to go because I really don't want to go on antibiotics as I'm not stable yet and I know what havoc they can wreak on the tummy.
So, my question is, does anyone know if there are any antibiotics that are better than others tummy wise? I doubt it, but I thought I would ask.
Thanks, Kelly

I so very rarely have to take antibiotics, so I'm hardly an expert on the subject, but the last time I needed one, I had pretty good luck with Biaxin (XL). It came in something called, I think, a "Z Pac"... 2 tablets once a day for a week. They're strong, but surprisingly, didn't do a thing to my system, except for a little heartburn. (And that was likely because I'm pill-phobic and had to crush the tablets to take them. Yum! )
I always avoid the -cillins. They give me D like mad.

there are some excellent past posts on taking antibiotics, how to minimize the GI side effects, and which types folks have found most tolerable.

I've had 2 diverticulitis attacks. I don't know what kind of antibiotic they gave me the first time, but the second time it was Flagyl. Worked wonders, and didn't bother my tummy at all. I keep it in my purse for emergencies, for the next time I'm a million miles away and suddenly get a diverticulitis attack.....
Check it out.

im just gonna give a warning about z-pac..... last time i had them it was 2 the first day and one the rest..... BEWARE OF THE FIRST DAY IT CAN BE VERY PAINFUL..... its really strong and therefore is VERY hard on your stomach, some people can tolerate it.... i have had it 3 times, the first 2 i was fine, but the third i thought i had appendicitis it was really that bad......

I have wondered that about antibiotics, too. Usually Keflex agrees with me OK. But Amoxicillin....Not too good. I still get a little diarrhea but if I take a probiotic that helps. I'm just curious what your reaction will be on the Flagyl. If you have time....let me know.

I was treated with Flagyl 3 times during my initial diagnosis, but that has been years ago! I am 4 doses into a 9 dose presciption, and other than a horrible taste when trying to swallow, I'm not sure if it is having any effect.
See, I have been having bizarre symptoms for three weeks now. You even responded to some of my posts - doctors thought it was gall bladder. Well, the first doc prescribed Levaquin just in case it was gastritis. So there has only been about 15 days since I finished 10 days of that med, and now I'm on the Flagyl.
My "D" attacks are getting more frequent and closer together. It might be from the antibiotic, but I really can't tell at this point. Still having the upper abdominal pain that began those three weeks ago, and initially had "D" with that too.
To have suffered "C" for more than 10 months and swing this far back to "D" along with dreadful, out-of-the-blue abdominal pain that doubles me over has been a shock to say the least. However, it is VERY much like it was when I began all of this some 14 years ago.
Sorry to ramble. I don't even think I answered your question. Flagyl, I'm sure it works fine. But I may never know if it is culprit to my "D" or not. Whatever is going on with me has a mind of its own!!

I don't really what it was prescribed for except as precautionary while tests are being done. I feel like I am getting worse, but don't think it has anything to do with the meds. Going to the health store for probiotics Saturday.

Caution: there are lots of different probiotics, and some have bad affects on people. Do a search, because this has been discussed at length, and you can see what everyone likes best. Several of us here take Jarro:

They have several different kinds. The one you want is Jarro-Dophilus EPS.
