Heartburn only happens when I eat onions. I lost my beloved onions a long time ago! LOL

...peppermint tea is bad for people with heartburn.
Never mind about the onions - you'd have only had to give them up as they cause gas!

I respectfully disagree due to so many sites that state that Guar Gum is used as a laxative (am I missing something)?
"Uses for Guar Gum Powder
Used In emulsions, toothpastes, lotions and creams. From ground nutritive seed tissue of the plants, cultivated in India, it has 5 to 8 times the thickening power of starch. Employed also as a bulk laxative, appetite suppressant, and to treat peptic ulcers. A stabilizer in Foods and beverages. No known toxicity"

Technically all soluble fiber supplements are marketed as laxatives. Heather was just trying to clarify that they are just as beneficial for people with diarrhea (if not more so) as for people with constipation.

Yup, this is true. Bulk laxative often means SFS, as the soluble fibre bulks out your BMs.

It all depends on how the company selling the soluble fiber markets it. The FDA lets you call it a bulk laxative if you want it to be considered a drug (like Metamucil), or you can market it as a fiber if you want it considered to be a health supplement (like Benefiber). It is NOT a laxative like stimulant or irritant laxatives. It will relieve constipation, but it will relieve diarrhea just as effectively. And if your bowel movements are totally normal, soluble fiber will just keep them that way. I really hate the term bulk laxative, because it scares so many IBS-D folks away from these products, which will do them so much good. It's like calling rice or barley a "bulk laxative" - really misleading and one my big pet peeves when it comes to fiber supplements.

I've heard of bad reactions to psyllium and inulin, but for guar gum the worst I've heard is bloating/gas. If it gave you cramps and diarrhea too that's unusual, though I'm starting to think nothing about IBS should surprise me anymore! Guar gum would be a bit tough to avoid altogether, since it is in so many different products. If you have a true allergy or some such you might want to search ingredient lists and see if even trace amounts of it are bothering you. If it's just the larger amounts that are in Benefiber, you should be okay trying other SFS. I have heard from people who cannot tolerate gums at all, no matter what type of plant family they're from. If that's true for you, watch out for things like locust bean gum and xanthan gum as well - they're in tons of products just like guar gum is.
