Figure THIS one, Sports Fans.

Caffeine? Bad? Why?

I can drink just a few cups of instant coffee--and it sets off my D-IBS. Fresh brewed coffee has a lesser effect, followed by freshly-brewed hot tea having an even smaller effect.

However, several DAYS of instant coffee ingestion results in a permanently "inflamed" gut..which now overreacts to everything...and persists for many days after coffee is stopped.

HOWEVER: no amount of iced tea, containing caffeine--and I mean gallons every day--has any effect whatsoever on my IBS!

Obviously, it's not the caffeine.

There must be some chemicals in fresh coffee, and hot fresh tea which are neutralized by oxidation as they cool. Or, maybe cooling alone changes the chemical composition...

And--there HAS to be a reason instant coffee is the worst. Maybe the "freeze drying" preserves the irritative chemical...which is released again when hot water is added...

Who knows? Ideas?

Why is iced tea completely harmless, hot tea not harmless?

(BTW--I have experimented with "just hot water" to rule out that "a hot liquid alone" causes gut irritation. It doesn't. I have also tried cutting milk out, then adding HUGE amounts of milk & dairy to my diet. Milk & dairy has no effect--good or bad.)
