I have been increasing my calorie intake by eating more bagels (theres 230 in one bagel!)angel food cake, rice noodles and things like that. I think I might add one more small meal in also. That would be great to have a mom that is a dietician! I have been thinking of speaking to one because I want to gain weight more than ANYTHING! I do know what ya mean by wanting to feel better first before worrying about anything else! I suppose I should quit focussing so much on the weight issue and quit caring what everyone thinks! Its just that I get a comment on my weight at least 2-3 times a week and it just depresses the hell outta me! I just want to crawl in a corner and cry when it happens and I just have to sit there like it doesnt bother me at all. Anyways, thank you sooo much for all the advice - I dont think I could ever thank everyone enough on here!

I just wanted to tell abby82 that I am down to 87 pounds from 104, and when I work out at the gym, I feel very self-conscious about my weight, as many people do not understand that one does not always go to a gym to LOSE WEIGHT! But I sympathize with how you feel; I would love to gain weight, too. It's impossible when one has IBS-D in
full swing; but hopefully as one gains control, more food will remain digested. I hate to fill up on junk foods just to gain weight. I was shopping the other day, and had a woman look at me, and comment, "You're so thin"! It makes you realize how hurtful comments like that are. Good luck with your weight gain plan!

So I take it you're still on dairy and are okay tolerating it. Just curious since I have taken my daughter completely off dairy and wondering if I made the right choice. She so badly needs to gain some weight back.

For a lot of people, dairy IS a big trigger. You totally did the right thing by taking her off of it. Besides, dairy alone isn't going to help her gain weight any better than any other sweet things will. If she can tolerate sugar just fine, I would definitely suggest some of the IBS-safe cakes and other treats in the recipe section. Seriously. They really are good!

I know this is going to sound crazy, but if you can, try not to focus solely on her gaining weight. Focus on her health first, get her attacks minimized and stabilized, and her weight will stabilize too. Honest. I'm in the same boat, by the way - I'm too thin now, because of this crazy disorder - but as my attacks have gotten fewer and my insides feel more stable, my eating has gotten more stable, too, progressively, and I've put a few pounds back on. It'll happen for her too.

I know it's difficult to watch someone you love be so sick, and it has to be a hundred times more so when it's your child, but you're keeping a good eye on her... she will be ok in the long run. Good luck!

Yes, I can tolerate a small amount of dairy if I take a lactaid pill. The yogurt ice cream & lactaid milk shake agreed with me OK. Everyone is different, though, so you will have to use the trial and error method. Most people with IBS cannot tolerate dairy so I am lucky.

Maybe you could try soy milk with soy ice cream shakes??

Good luck
