Hi Chris--

Have you tried drinking green tea? It has some caffeine, but it's not the same jolt that coffee or even black tea has. It was just in the news that moderate and steady caffeine intake leads to better alertness than getting a lot at once, so you might find that sipping some green tea would do the trick.

Note that green tea will taste nasty if you steep it for more than 90 seconds. You can also get flavored green teas (Tazo has a real nice Green Ginger tea) if you're not thrilled by the taste of the straight stuff.

Have you seen any of the posts for Rocomojo? We discussed this at length a few months back -- do a search and you'll find a lot about it; some liked it but most did not. I believe Kree likes it, but I think she doctors it up a little?

Just recently there was a thread about Teeccino. Miss Pepper and I ordered the stuff and gave it a try. She liked it, I hated it (and so did my hubby). I sent the remainder of mine to Heather, and she and her hubby, Will, both loved it. So I'm in the minority. You might give it a try. If you do a search for the past month in this board, you'll find it.

Now, having said all that, I have THE BEST FIX for ya! It's Soy Dream Mocha Fudge Frozen Non-Dairy Dessert. You can do a search for that too if you want, because I've discussed it at length; it's my absolute FAVE! It does contain a little coffee, but not much -- it's about mid-way down on the ingredient list. The "ice cream" tastes JUST like coffee with a little fudge thrown in -- but just a little, so that if you let it melt a little bit and stir it around real well, you got yourself one helluva fab mocha! It totally satisfies my coffee craving -- except maybe for the "hot cup in the morning" thing. It does contain a little more percentage of fat than we're allowed, so ya gotta keep it to a very small serving, and, although you should have a soluble fiber first, don't tell anyone but I never do. And it never bothers me -- the extra fat, the coffee in it, neither bother me at all.

You have to get it at a health food store, but when I go down there I stock up on it, bringing back as many as will fit in my tiny freezer.

Oh, and there are lots of other good flavors of Soy Dream Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert (blueberry is great and strawberry swirl is to die for), but to satisfy your coffee craving, boyfriend, MOCHA FUDGE IS IT!

Let us know how you like it --

Bev

Chris,
I actually take caffeine pills for my fibro fatigue. Lucidex is one brand. No Doz is another. They don't seem to bother my tummy as long as I only take one or two a day.

Guarana is another source. They actually have a soft drink that's very popular in Brazil that has guarana in it.

Check out Yerba Mate tea. You can find it in most health food stores.

Chris, I was thinking about your post last night and had another idea. My brother used to fall asleep in front of his computer at work all the time. He finally found out he was actually sleep deprived due to sleep apnea. Have you been checked for that?

There's a real easy way to test for sleep deprivation in general. It was in the NY Times. If you lie down in a darkened room during the day and fall asleep within 15 minutes, you're sleep deprived and should make every effort to get more sleep every night or there will be long term consequences for your health.

Just a thought, take what you like and leave the rest!
