Han Solo,

I feel that we have a lot in common. I just found out that I am pregnant. (Talk about shocked - I have one son. He's 10) One of my first thoughts was how to handle pregnancy and the eating thing. Will I be able to eat enough? Can I fight off the cravings, etc. How are you doing with your pregnancy? What type of prenatal vitamins are you able to tolerate? I have also had ocd for many years, longer than ibs. I find it to be a complicating factor. I believe you mentioned ocd in an earlier post. Sorry if I am confused. This day has thrown me for a loop - in a happy way though.

You're right. It looks like we have a lot in common. Maybe you can help me with the OCD thing and I can help you with the pregnancy/IBS thing. That would be so wonderful. I'm having trouble with the OCD right now - I'm just coming to grips with it after hiding it for 20 years. Not easy in the ideal circumstances. With a toddler and a pregnancy, whoa.
As to your question - I am OK with pretty much any prenatal vitamin so I can't help you there. You will be fine. Once you get through the first trimester, you will likely find that your IBS will improve. I don't know if you're IBS D or C. I'm D and it has almost completely disappeared since week 17. During my first pregnancy, I was so worried about providing for the baby nutrition wise. That's one of the first things they put me at ease about. Take your prenatal vitamins and do your best. That's all we can do. Most women feel yucky in the first trimester - fortunately the nutritional needs of the eensey weensey are minimal. Talk to your Doc about your concerns. If you get nauseous, there is a med called Diclectin you can ask your Doc about. It's Vitamin B6 and a Antihistamine which can help. As can Heather's What to Eat when you Can't eat anything section and ginger tea. Hit the search button - we talked about pregnancy concerns in previous posts with others on the board. It may help with your concerns. In the meantime, congratulations! I am so happy for you! We'll hopefully type again soon!

Han,
I didnt know you have ocd! I have obsessive compulsive disorder too, its not bad though. I just have little habits like my hands always have to be clean, and I hate odd numbers! Everything has to be even, i have to wake up on an even number, i have to have an even number of posts, ect. It really gets me annoyed and everyone around me too, lol.

Thanks H2. It took me 10 minutes to do it and then I realized you already had! Next time, I'll check first. Thanks again for your help.

Han Solo,

Nausea is not very bad for me, I actually wish it was worse sometimes because I'm afraid if I have no symptoms that I will miscarry. I had trouble with the vitamins last time, but don't remember what kind they eventually put me on - it was so long ago. I'm mostly D and I had it under control so well with the diet, but the hormones seem to be making it come back, hope that goes away in the second trimester (mostly I just hope I get there.) As far as the ocd goes, having a child and raising him for the past 10 years has forced me to get over some of it. Things can't always be clean and things don't always go as planned - sometimes kids throw up in the car, etc. - at first I was freaked out, but I have learned to formulate a new definition of successs. I still have my little quirks and I have refused medication for many years because I am functional (and I hated how it made me feel), although I realize it is very necessary for some. It can present in so many different ways, I'm not sure what you're dealing with, but I hope it is not too intrusive. I would be glad to talk about it with you. I may have more food questions in the future!

Just try to be glad for living without the nausea. Don't take it as a worry - take it as a gift. Remember, every pregnancy is different. This one may be night and day from your first one. As for vitamins and the diet and the "D", just take it a day at a time. I know the worries about miscarriage. Que Sera. There is nothing really that you can do to control this - if it is meant to be, your baby will be just fine. That's the attitude I took. I even had bleeding and a threatened miscarriage this time. The Doc said either it will stop, or you will miscarry. Nature takes care of itself. I hope this helps - not scares more.
As for the OCD - I admit I'm downright terrified. I have lived in fear so long. I am now realizing how much it has dictated my life and it's very frustrating. I want to stop ... but I know it's a process. I have found meds that help and the IBS is improving as a result. I'm a germ and virus freak. Do you know any websites where there are nice discussion forums like this one? I could really use a place to talk but this is an IBS board.

Remember, with pregnancy, the OCD may worsen or improve as will your IBS. My OCD and IBS got a lot worse after the birth of my son. OCD was so out of control I had to get help. Thanke heaven for HEather's diet - saved me on the IBS front. Expect changes and take them a day at a time. I'm here for you!

Thank you SO MUCH for your help! (((hugs))) I think I will take Heather's advice and try going gluten free (despite my doc) and see if it seems I have celiac (I hope not)! I've done some research, and it seems that whether I have celiac or not, I still have IBS (fat is a trigger, so is fructose, etc). I'll keep you posted...

I just don't know what I would do without this board! This has been such a rough time for me...and everyone here is going through similair stuff...and we're all like a big fam! Thanks guys...

Han Solo,

I read your post about the ocd and I really wish I could help. I have not visited any ocd message boards, but I did a search and found that there are many out there. I don't know know if they are as friendly as this board.

I am very intersested in what you said about the meds helping your ibs as well. I was wondering which med? I know this is not an ocd board, so I was thinking about posting my e-mail address on my user bio page and maybe we could talk some more about it that way?

By the way, nausea is beginning to kick in. I can't say I'm enjoying that, but it makes me worry less.

You said your ibs is in remission now. The big question is - Can you eat cheese? I want to eat cheese so bad!

Ginger tea can be helpful for nausea. Also, there is a drug called Diclectin - did I tell you about it? It's an antihistamine and Vitamin B6 which I found helpful. You may want to ask your Doc. And yes, oh, yes, I am eating Cheese like never before. I still get gassy, but much less and almost no risk of dirarhea. Sigh. I wish it could always be like this! I consider it on of the biggest "Pregnant Perks!". I'm eating Caesar Salads (usually a Death by IBS food for me) and Pizza and ....
Hopefully, you will get some relief in pregnancy too from the IBS. However, if you tend to get constipated, it may get worse.
The meds I am on is Paxil. It is doing wonders for my anxiety but not stopping obsessions and compulsions. I think it helps the IBS simply because I am less tense and am more relaxed - an important thing for controlling IBS symptoms.
And yes, if you are comfortable posting your e-mail, I will e-mail you and put Han Solo from IBS board so you know it's me (I haven't given out my name on this board)
Let me know what you think.
