My name is Sarah, I am not really new but I have not posted in at least 9 months. My doctor had told me before that he thought that I may have IBS. I bought Heather's books and fallowed the plan. I started feeling better and gradually stopped fallowing the plan. I never really had a lot of stomach pain so I figured that maybe I did not have IBS. I was feeling pretty good for almost a year (6 months of the diet).

About a month a go my stomach started getting queasy a lot. If I ate or didn't it was upset. Then about three weeks ago I was in the ER with stomach pain. If felt like labor pains! The said that there was nothing wrong and send me home. Then a few days later I was putting away laundry and I got so dizzy I thought for sure I was going to pass out. I went and laid down, but I was still dizzy and I started to get nauseas. I have seen my doctor but she said I need to learn to deal with it. I have been dizzy and nauseas for the last 3 weeks. I am also having pain in my stomach that comes and goes and alternating diarrhea and constipation. I have been lying in bed for 3 weeks and have not been able to work or care for my 3 year old.

I know that this is a long post but I wanted you all to have the whole story. My question is can the dizziness and nausea be related to IBS or is it something totally different? I have been told that I am not dehydrated; I don't have low blood pressure or low blood sugar. If this is not IBS related than I don't know what else to think. I gave my books to a friend and can not get them back so I am unable to look this up in the books.

Thanks for you help,
Sarah

Glad to have you back, not glad that you are feeling so bad, with a baby to take care of on top of it. I am an alternator also, I never know what tomorrow is going to bring. You may have to purchase the books again, they are just so great to have for a reference.

Hope you get back on track soon, hate to hear about the stomach pain. Is it in your tummy or abdomin? I wish I could help you more.

Hi there and welcome back!

Were you properly diagnosed in the first place? For this, you NEED to have a blood test, stool sample test AND a colonoscopy. These are NECESSARY! If the answer is no, then go back to your doc and insist you have them. IBS can only be diagnosed by ruling everything else out. Also, even if you have been properly diagnosed, you should get tested again whenever your symptoms change dramatically for the worst.

Are you following the diet now? If not, I'd go back to it. And get a soluble fibre supplement - if you do have IBS, then you're IBS-A (alternating) so a supplement is extra important. It'll help prevent both the D and the C.

Nausea is definitely a symptom of IBS and some of us get dizziness as well (but you NEED to be checked uot properly). If you don't get heartburn, try ginger for the nausea. Or you can get homeopathic remedies for nausea that are very helpful. With the dizziness, make sure you eat little and regular, don't stand up quickly or move too fast, avoid hot baths/showers/rooms. If you get dizzy, just lie down FLAT or sit with your head between your knees. This should make it go away after a while. But you might want to get your ears checked out too, as ear infections, etc can cause dizziness.

Good luck!

Thank you all for welcoming me. Previously I had blood test done, an endoscope, and an upper GI. They all came back negative.

I do have GERD as well so pepermint teas do not work for me. I have been using ginger tea but it seems to strong for me.

My biggest problem now is that if I am up trying to do anything for longer than 5 minutes I get so dizzy and nauseas that I have to lay down. After that I generally feel bad for the rest of the day. So at this point I have just been staying in bed but we are going on three weeks. I don't know what to do?

My doctor doesn't offer any help for the dizziness infact she acts like I made it up. I am seeing a new doctor on Tuesday so hopefully I will get some answers.

Hi there.

Well, hopefully your new doctor will be better - the one you have atm is obviously useless. Being this dizzy is NOT normal for IBS-ers. And you MUST have a colonoscopy. Not much fun, but it's better than having something else that hasn't been diagnosed.

Avoid ginger with GERDs (although how did your upper GI scope come back negative if you have this?).

Has your doc even checked out your ears? An inner ear infection could make you very dizzy and nauseous.

No my doctor did not check my ears. I don't have any ear pain but I have herd that you can have inner ear conditions without pain. I am going to ask my new doctor about that.

If dizziness to the degree is not normal with IBS then I guess I have to keep searching.

What can I use for the nausea besides ginger tea? I prefer teas because I don't like to take pill or powders very much. I can tolorate Camomile but it makes me so tired.

Hi and welcome,

I'm not familiar with the dizziness but I have had plenty of nausea. Pepto Bismol helps some. Also a prescription for Pheneragan (not sure of spelling) helps but makes you sleepy. I am glad you are seeing a new doctor. What kind of doctor is he? Is he a specialist? Good luck to you...it's no fun being sick.

I take Dramamine II, the non-drowsy kind. We buy the generic brand, it's called Meclazine. You might have to ask the pharmacist for it. It works on all kinds of dizziness and nausea, not just travel sickness.

Also, in a pinch, any antihistamine will help nausea and dizziness somewhat.

Oh, I just re-read your post and see that you don't like to take pills much. The traditional home remedy for nausea is ginger ale (or ginger tea) and soda crackers. Also helps to keep a little food in your tummy all the time because nausea is worse when your stomach is empty.

Oh, and there's something called BioBands that help by pressing on an acupressure point in your wrist. I've used them with good results.

Good luck with the new doc.

especially when unrelated to the times you're having abdominal symptoms, is not typical of IBS at all. I'd insist your doc send you to a specialist if she can't figure out what's going on. Telling you just to learn to live with it is completely unacceptable. Some of your symptoms do sound like IBS, and you may well have that, but something else on top of it is likely causing your dizziness, and that needs to be figured out.

Best,
Heather
