I am new to this board and was wondering if a vegetarian diet is benefical to someone suffering from IBS. I've been contemplating going vegetarian since there are quite a few things that I eat at the moment that bother my stomach.

Welcome to the board! There's a number of people here who are vegetarians or vegans. But there's also a lot of us that aren't. I've quit eating red meat, but I still eat chicken and fish. Keep in mind that even some things that are "vegetarian" might still be an IBS trigger. Fried foods like tempura. Raw broccoli. Brown rice. These could all trigger an attack if not cushioned with a good soluble fiber base.
Lots of info here, so look around, read up, ask us questions and keep coming back!

Welcome Lisad. I have only been here a few weeks but have learned a wealth of information. Most any question you have will be answered. If you are looking for a specific topic, do a search and it will bring up all the posts on that topic.

Welcome to the boards! The vegetarian diet and the IBS diet are extremely compatible. There's lots of vegetarians among us. With that said, you don't have to become a vegetarian to fix your IBS. As Laura Sue said, white meat chicken, turkey and fish and seafood are all safe - it's just the red meats you're cutting out. Since most vegetarians eat fish and seafood the only difference between the diets is the chicken and the turkey. It's your choice - do what you feel is best.

Welcome to the Boards, Lisa! You came to the right place.
You need to get Heather's book, "The First Year." It will explain in detail the proper diet for IBS. Practically all of us follow it to the letter. It's not a vegetarian diet, although red meat is eliminated completely, as well as dark poultry meat (both triggers).
Another BIG triggers is coffee -- including decaf -- there's an enzyme in it that's a HUGE trigger. When I finally cut it out of my diet, I instantly got better.
I eat mostly salmon and tuna, because I have high cholesterol, but occasionally I'll splurge on a little white meat turkey.
So, as the others have said, you don't HAVE to go vegan if you don't want to.
Again, welcome to the Boards! And don't forget to get Heather's book (check the link to your left).
Bev.
